The document discusses tower crane foundations and wind load considerations. It provides examples of different foundation types including rail mounted, static base on pad foundation, steel grillage, and piled base. The appropriate foundation type depends on factors like the crane type, class, ground conditions, and location constraints. Foundation designs should follow CIRIA C654 guidance. Foundation forces must be calculated according to EN14439:2006, applying out-of-service wind loads for the correct geographical region per FEM1.005. The HSE advises applying Region C or D wind loads to all cranes regardless of age. Typical foundation forces and additional guidance are provided.

Tower Crane Foundations and Wind Loadings

Examples of tower crane foundation types

Rail Mounted

Static base on pad foundation

Steel Grillage

Pad base with cast in fixing angles

Piled base with cast in fixing angles

The type of base used will be determined by

a number of site factors
Type of crane luffing jib or saddle jib
Class of crane light, medium or heavy duty
Ground conditions very soft clay to rock
Location constraints open site or congested inner city

Foundation designs should be carried out in accordance to

CIRIA C654 Tower Crane Stability

Tower crane foundation forces to be calculated in accordance

with EN14439:2006

Out of service wind loadings to

FEM1.005 for the correct geographical
region.

The Health and Safety Executive

advises that Region C and Region D outof-service wind loads should be applied
to ALL tower cranes regardless of age.

Tower Crane Interest Group TIN 027

Typical foundation forces in accordance with EN14439 (FEM1.005 C25)

For any tower crane used in the UK the HSE will be looking
for reassurance that the crane has been erected correctly
and is safe to use
For all cranes irrespective of age
Out of service wind speeds based on wind zones C25 or D25.
Wind loading calculated inline with EN14439.
Out of stability proof based on EN14439 (FEM1.005- wind from rear and wind
from front or wind from any direction).
Loading and build specification conveyed in clear concise manner
Foundation loadings have been conveyed to PC and temporary works designer.
