Silt Content

This document outlines two methods for determining the silt content in fine aggregate: by volume and by weight. For the volume method, sand is mixed with water and the thickness of the settled silt layer is measured after 10 minutes, with silt content calculated as a percentage of thickness. For the weight method, sand is washed over a 75-micron sieve, dried, and weighed before and after to determine material passing through the sieve, with silt content calculated as a percentage of the original dry weight. The silt content by either method should be less than 8% according to reference standard IS 2386- Part I.

Purpose :The purpose of this test is for determination of silt content in fine

aggregate.
1. Silt Test By Volume.
2. Silt Test By Weight

Apparatus:

Weighing balance (capacity of not less than 3kg accurate to 0.5 gm).
75 sieve and 1.18mm Sieve.
Measuring cylinder (500-ml capacity).
Oven (thermostatically controlled temperature of 100 0 to 110 0 c).

Reference Standard : IS 2386- Part I

SILT CONTENT BY VOLUME

Fill half of the measuring cylinder with sand and pour water with a pinch
of salt / alum to help the process of sedimentation.

Shake the cylinder vigorously.

Keep the cylinder on a level platform and allow it to settle for 10min

Observation:
Note down the thickness of silt layer after 10 minute .

Calculation:
% Silt =

Thickness Of Silt Layer X 100

Thickness of Sand

The silt % should be less than 8% after 10 min.

SILT CONTENT BY WEIGHT

Procedure :

Take the sand sample and dry it at a temperature 100 0c -110 0c.

After cooling place a weighed quantity (about 100 gm) of sample in

container and cover it with sufficient water.

Agitate the contents of container vigorously to dislodge the silt particles.

Pour the wash water containing the suspended particles and dissolved soil
particles over a 75- sieve.

Add more water to washed sample and repeat the operation.

Dry the washed sample to a constant mass at a temperature not exceeding

110 0c.

Weigh the dry sample and calculate the material passing 75-

Calculation:
1. Dry weight of test sample = X
2.
Dry weight of washed sample = Y
3.
Amount of material finer than 75- = X-Y
4.
Percentage of material finer than 75- or

% of silt content =

(X - Y) 100
(X)
