Motorcycle Robot Powerpoint

This document outlines the steps of the engineering design process used by students at Somerset Berkley Regional High School to build a robotic motorcycle. The students identified building a functional robot as the problem. They researched robot designs online and brainstormed ideas. Their initial prototype had issues with gears and movement. After modifications, later prototypes worked better but still had problems. The students learned about using light, motion, and gear systems. They would pursue a different design next time, but learned how sensors can control a robot.

1. Engineering Design
Central Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem
solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires
designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should
demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a
problem or meet a challenge.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the
problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible
solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the
solutions, and redesign.

Step 1
Identify the
problem

The project was to build any robot that

we wanted with as much time that we
needed. We also had to make the
robot actually work. We as a group
had built a motorcycle robot that was
able to move with light and motion
sensors.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Step 2
Research the
problem
Explore other options via the internet
Student: List the internet sites that were
helpful.

What did you learn from your research?

A from this video we learned how to
build the robot and get the idea on how
to build it.

Step 3
Develop solutions
BRAINSTORM
COLLABORATION

Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.
1.Some ideas about the robot that we had problems with was the gearing and able
to make the robot move in the direction that we wanted it to move in.
2. make sure that what you are building you know how to gear it correctly and
practice with the robot to make sure that the robot actually works.
3.make sure that you have enough pieces for the robot so that you don't run out.

Step 4
Select the best
Possible solution(s)

Design idea #1
Pro: The pro of the robot was that we had never built a robot like
that before and that we stepped a new level that we had not
before and that gave us a challenge and it was good for us.

___________________________________________________
Con: We over estimated our ability to make the robot we had a lot
of trouble making this robot because we did not have the right
pieces to actually build the robot. The gears were a big problem
they just didnt want to work so we had to make some major
modifications to the robot.

Design idea #2
Pro: We did not really need to make a new idea we stuck with
what we had.

Con: we had to make modifications.

Step 5
Construct a prototype

Student: Build a robot with your nxt lego kit

Use the next slide(s) for your digital pictures of your prototypes.
If the robot fails the design must be modified and retested.

Step 7
Communicate the solution(s)

Provide the YouTube link of your video that shows

how your robot meets the challenge.

Step 8
Redesign

If you could do this over again what would you do differently?

I would get a different robot idea. Although that this robot is a
cool idea it did not live up to potential that we wanted and that
was not cool.

What did you learn? We learned how to use light sensors

and motion sensors with our robot. also how to use some
gears that we didnt before.
