Good morning students! It is so good to see you today. This week we have started to
learn about a new letter. Does anyone remember what letter that is? Good! The letter F! Now
who wants to take a field trip to learn more about the letter F? You all do? Lets go! Everyone put
your wings out, we are flying to Italy! Students will hold arms out and we will simulate flying to
Italy. Yay! We made it! Now we need to go find Chef Fabio. Here he is! Lets see what he has to
say. Show the Youtube Video The Letter F Song. Wow, Chef Fabio knows so many words and
names that start with a certain letter. What letter was it? F! Thats right! Very good!

Teaching (12 minutes)

Ok, so now that we know what letter we are focusing on, lets talk about the sound the
letter makes. Can you make the sound the letter F makes? Good! One more time.. Awesome!
You both really know your sound. Now, the letter F can look different. There is one that you see
at the beginning of a sentence. What is that called? An upper case letter! Correct! So what is it
called if it is just somewhere else throughout the sentence? A lower case letter! You are so
smart! Lets see how they look different. Teacher gives each student a copy of a lower and upper
case F. Can you please point to the upper case F? Good! And what about the lower? Awesome!
So what makes these look different? Right, the upper case has a straight line on top and goes at
the beginning of a sentence or for a name. Lets trace the upper case F with our finger. The
lower case has a curved top and is used for all the other times. Lets trace the lower case F with
our finger. Now lets take a look at this poem! Can someone tell me what animal this poem is
about? Yes, a fish! Its about a fancy fish. Lets read it together. Teacher leads students in
reading the poem out loud. Great job! Did you notice that a certain letter was used a lot? Yes, F
was! And what sound did we say the letter F makes? Good. Now that we know the sound, do we
remember what a capital and lower case F looks like? I want you to take your pencil and circle
every time you see the letter F. Students will take time to circle all of the Fs they saw in the
poem. How many did you find? 10? Thats correct! There are 10 Fs. How many are upper

case? 2! How many are lower case? 7! You all did so great! Can I see a thumbs up if we feel like
we know our letter Fs? Awesome!

Practice (10 minutes)

Who is ready for another field trip?! Now we are off to the beach! Lets drive our cars to
the beach. Students will pretend to hold the wheel and drive down to the beach. Here we are!
And look, we even have sand! Teacher will show students the sand boxes, but they will not hold
it yet. Lets take what we learned about the letter F, and practice in the sand! Here are some
objects. Can you please pick one of the objects that start with an F? Students will alternate
picking objects. Great! What is the picture? Fox! So lets practice writing fox in the sand. The
students will write either an upper or lower case F in the first square (the teacher will tell them
which one before hand) and then will complete the word in the second half of the sand box.
They will walk through all of the objects for practice. Wow, what a trip to the beach! We now are
masters at the letter F! Lets head back home.

Assessment (5 minutes)
The teacher will hand out the assessment. The first part is that the students will trace an
upper and lower case F. The teacher will read the picture items on the page out loud to the
students. Then they will circle the items that start with the letter F. They will turn into the teacher
when completed.

Closure
Every make the sound for F! Now have a FFFFun day!

Data Analysis
Student J correctly identified all 7 items that began with the letter F on the assessment.
Student T identified 6 out of 7 correctly, but needed a little more guidance and repeating of
words along the way. Student J and T could both correctly identify the letter F, upper and lower
case. And both of the students were able to identify and make the sound the letter F makes. All
of the student objectives were met.

Reflection

Design For Learning

This lesson ran smoothly and I really feel like the students became more confident in
their knowledge of the letter F. It was fast moving so that helped keep their attention span. They
were excited to go on our field trips and to play in the sand. One thing I should have done
differently is model how to draw the words in the sand. One student had a hard time drawing in
the sand without spilling a lot of it out of the container. I should also put down a paper towel
under their tub of sand in case they spill to make the clean up process even easier. Overall, the
students learning objectives seemed to be met and they enjoyed attaining their goals.
