Budget Differentiation
Rationale: Tiering this lesson allows students to begin at their current level and
progress at their own speed.
Benchmarks: Transitional Skills, Math
DI Strategy: Tiered assignments
Differentiate What? Process
Differentiate How? Readiness and Interest
Resources needed:
1. At least two Sunday and one week of newspaper classified and grocery ads
2. Budget outline, including fixed/flexible (more detailed for independent living
situation for advanced students) or necessary/luxury (less detailed such as allowance
spending for less independent learners).
Teacher preparation:
1. Provide introductory lesson on budgeting and terms.
2. Brainstorm with class on fixed/necessities, flexible/luxury items, varying expenses,
wants/needs, etc.
3. Collect newspapers.
4. Prepare worksheets at different ability levels (copy attached) (day-week-month
allowance for lower; independent living by week-month-year for higher).
Explanation of activity:
1. Students use newspapers to research items for their specific budget needs (living at
home, semi-independently, independently).
2. Students have time for a reality check (of appropriate usage of money to match
budget) with teacher/aide before final product is due.
3. Students can take 3-5 days to complete, depending on class schedule, readiness and
speed of work.
4. Teacher facilitates and assists with student problems
5. A follow-up activity would be to have students find a job to support their budget.
