Butterflies go through four life stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult. As a caterpillar, it eats leaves and molts several times as it grows. It then forms a chrysalis and undergoes metamorphosis, emerging as a winged adult butterfly. Most adult butterflies only live a couple weeks, during which they drink nectar, mate, and the female lays eggs to continue the life cycle.

Butterflie

Butterflies are some of the most interesting insects on the

planet Earth. There are more than seventeen thousand different
kinds of butterflies! Butterflies come in all shapes and sizes.

Butterflies go through four main stages of life; the egg stage,

the larva stage, the pupa stage and the adult stage. The mother
butterfly lays an egg on a leaf or plant. Then, the egg hatches
into a small larva, or caterpillar.

As a larva, or caterpillar, the future butterfly eats as much as possible.

The caterpillar eats leaves and grows bigger and bigger. As it grows
bigger it puts on a new, bigger skin. The caterpillar changes its skin four
or five times.

After a few weeks, the caterpillar enters the next stage of its life. The
caterpillar will look for a good place to rest. It attaches itself to a leaf and
makes a pupa, or chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis it grows wings and legs.

When the process completed, the chrysalis opens and a

butterfly comes out. Most butterflies only live a couple of
weeks, just enough time to drink flower nectar and to mate.
Then the life cycle begins again.

If I were
a
Butterfly

If I Were A Butterfly
If I were a butterfly, Id use my nose,
To find the nectar on a rose.
If I were a butterfly Id fly far,
Hoping to land on a silver star.
If I were a butterfly Id fly through the night,
That would fill me with such delight.
If I were a butterfly Id zoom through the air,
Hoping to find a friend out there.
If I were a butterfly on a sunny day,
Id go to the beach so I can play.
I am not a butterfly. Thats for sure!
But, it is fun to think about if I were.
