Math Unit 1 Lesson 2

This document provides information about a 7th grade math unit on ratios and proportional relationships. It outlines a lesson plan over multiple days that focuses on simplifying complex fractions and finding unit rates. The plan includes using stations for independent and small group work, and assessments to check understanding. Activities include examples, guided practice, real-world applications, test preparation, and a video for independent practice.

Unit Topic: Ratios and Proportional Relationships

Source: Glencoe Math Common Core Edition, Course 2, Volume 1, Pages 17-24 McGraw Hill
Accommodations:
Leveled Math Group of 14 - 7th grade students based on NWEA scores. Workshop model allows for 1:1 or small group
work to focus on individual needs. Stations address differing learning modalities.

Chapter 1 Lesson 2: Rates CCSS=7.RP.1 & 7.NS.3

Day 1
Goal: Students will prepare to simplify complex fractions and find unit
rates.
Materials needed:
Smart Board
Laptop
Guided Practice worksheet packets
Activity:
Activate prior knowledgeDetermining unit rates:
Pounds per dollar? Dollars per pound? Example: I bought 2 pounds of almonds
for $13. How would I write my proportion to find the cost for 1 pound? What if I
had just $4 and I wanted to buy as many almonds as I could. How would I set up
the ratio to determine the answer?
13 dollars = $6.50 per pound
2 pounds
2 pounds = 1 pound
13 dollars
6.50 dollars

= .15 pounds per dollar

We would then multiply .15 times $4.00 to get our answer of .60 or six tenths or
3/5 of a pound of almonds for $4.
Simplify complex fractionsDisplay pg. 17 from book on Smart Board. Go over example.
Precede with Guided Practice

Closure:
Regroup. How successful were we as learners today? What did we do well? Are
there things we could focus on tomorrow to be more successful?
Assessment:
Completion of Guided Practice packet, discussion
Days 2-6
Goal: Students will simplify complex fractions and find unit rates through
independent station work.
Materials needed:
Smart Board
Laptop
Folders
Math Notebooks
Station tubsVocabulary Station: Direction card, vocab sheets, pencils, vocab matching card sets, math books
(to check vocab match) Continued from Lesson 1
H.O.T. Problems: Direction card, pencils
Independent Work: Independent Practice worksheet packet, pencils
Real Life Application Station: Direction card, worksheets, pencils, headphones
Common Core Review Station: Worksheets, pencils, headphones

Activity:
Continue with station work. Meet with individuals/small groups to determine if
grasping content and to reteach/reinforce concepts, if needed.
Daily Closure:
Regroup. How successful were we as learners today? What did we do well? Are
there things we could focus on tomorrow to be more successful?
Assessment:
Completion of station work, discussion, observation

H.O.T. Problems Station

H.O.T. problems are used to show your higher-level thinking. You need to
respond to them in your math journal. Be sure to give a complete answer and
explain your thinking. Dont forget to put the heading H.O.T. Problems and the
date at the top of the page.
Glue your H.O.T. Problems slip into your math notebook and then write the
answers to the problems.

Real Life Application

We use complex fractions in real life in many ways. For example, I like to make
cupcakes because I have a sweet tooth. If I only have one egg, but my recipe
calls for 2, I can still make some cupcakes by dividing all the ingredients by 2. So
if I need 1 cups flour, I can use a complex fraction to get my unit rate: 1/2 or
7/8 of a cup of flour. Be thinking of your example for using a complex fraction to
find a unit rate as you complete the work below.

Scan the QR code and watch the video.

Complete the problems on the enclosed sheet.
You must show your work!

When you have finished this worksheet, put it on the completed work side of your
folder.

Marcus has a bag of cat food that contains 22 cups. If he feeds his
cats a total of 3/4 cup of food per day, how many days will the bag
last?
1. Set this problem up.
2. Find the answer.
6) Come up with your own example for finding a unit rate using complex fractions.
