313 Tree Hook

The lesson plan introduces students to trees through a slideshow of different types of trees. Students will then draw leaves on a tree on the SmartBoard to take attendance and count the total leaves to see how many students are present. To assess learning, teachers will observe students and record their responses when asked what they already know about trees.

Lesson Sketch for EDT 313

Individual completing this lesson plan:

Krisi Harvey and Kathryn Dahlhausen

Lesson title:
Introduction to Trees (Hook)
Date that lesson was taught: Tuesday, March 3, 2015
Standards in 2 Domains: Speak audibly and express
thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly. Count to 20 by ones with increasing accuracy.
Instructional objectives: list 2observable/measurable objectives for this lesson. Use precise language w/ action verbs.
The student will be able to:
1. state what they know about trees.
2. count the number of leaves on the tree.
Experiences: Describe authentic (real life, hands-on not representational) materials and enticing/ creative experiences in
which children are actively engaged. Safety should be addressed if warranted.

Upon student arrival, a slideshow of different types of trees will be playing on the Smart Board. This will
interest students through visual stimulation.
After breakfast, the children will gather on the carpet area in front of the screen. At this point, we will
stop the slideshow.
There will be a tree without leaves on it on the Smart Board. To take attendance, each student will draw a
leaf onto the tree. Then we will count all of the leaves to see how many students there are in class that day.
Ask the students what they noticed about the slideshow.
We will open a blank page on the SmartBoard. Then, we will ask students to tell us what they know
about trees. Responses will be written on the SmartBoard.
We will then tell students that the next couple of weeks, we will be learning more about trees and
eventually build one as a class

Evidence of student learning:

Student learning will be documented through observation. We will also record student responses to what
they already know about trees.
