Reflection Costume Design

Costumes were carefully decided to reflect the main characters


personality in the historical context.
Miss Brill dons a faded purple tea gown and a shabby piece of fur. Though
grimy and shabby, this fur symbolises Miss Brills illusions about herself
whenever she wears it, she believes that she is an actress, putting on a show for
everyone. However, the audience can see the disparity in her actions since the
faded purple colour of her costume reminds us of musk, dust and decay and
lacks the colour and style of a young womans dressing.
Her faded purple gown is juxtaposed against Fantasys elaborate and
flamboyant tea gown, which is bright purple and pink. The numerous layers of
frills and her elaborate fan reflect Fantasys dramatic, frivolous personality. This
stark contrast between Miss Brill and Fantasy allows the audience to see the
jarring difference between how Miss Brill perceives herself to look and her actual
appearance. Fantasy is who Miss Brill hopes to be and who she tries to emulate
in her delusions that she is young. The audience has a sense of foreboding Miss
Brill is shunning reality and nothing good will come out of it.
Furthermore, Reality wears a top hat, spectacles, trousers and a cravat.
The dark tone of his costume reflects his serious, pragmatic attitude. His
spectacles represent logic and rationality. His dark and serious costume is
juxtaposed against Fantasys to allow the audience to visualise the separate
nature of reality and fantasy. One cannot be embedded in fantasy while
grounded in reality at the same time. Reality also wields a cane, which
symbolises the power and superiority of logic and rationality against the flimsy
nature of fantasy. However, his grim clothing can also be seen as sinister,
reflecting the blunt, harsh nature of the truth.
