American Sign Language

American Sign Language (ASL) is used by deaf communities around the world. While its exact origins are unknown, ASL began developing in the United States in 1814 under Dr. Thomas Hopkins Gaulladet. ASL is the fourth most used language in America and has been used for over 200 years. There are different sign languages used depending on the country, such as British Sign Language and French Sign Language. Gallaudet University, located in Washington D.C., was the first college established for the deaf.
