Pagel INTRODUCTION Book eight of the DRUM READER series deals with the various forms of triplets. HALF NOTE TRIPLETS, QUARTER NOTE TRIPLETS, EIGHTH NOTE: TRIPLETS, SIXTEENTH NOTE TRIPLETS, THIRTY SECOND NOTE TRIPLETS, Triplets have always created a problem for all musicians. The reason for this is that the grouping of three is an artificial division and does not form natural rhy- thms for us. You must remember when you divide a note in two parts this is even groups and is easy to feel and understand. This is the same for groups of four, Such as four eighths in a half note, four sixteenths in a quarter note. We can divide a note into two or four even parts but when it comes to dividing notes into groups of three it is not easy to feel or count. ne materials you will find in book eight of this series will help you understand of notes into definite groups of three, A triplet must have a number TA TRIPLET IF THE NUMBER THREE DOFS NOT APPEAR OUP OF THREE, So the first rule to understand triplets is that the muist be there at all times, 3: count for triplets is as follows: 1 TRIP LET 2 TRIP LET 3 TRIP LET You will see this marked with the following letter and number marks each group of triplets: LT L 2 TL 3TL 471... you play it as you say it. Count out loud when you play the material in this book. This will help you hear and understand the rhythmical breakdown better. So the next rule is to count out loud. On the following pages you will read triplet groups in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4, Each triplet has a definite value. Follow the explanation on the next page to clear up the various values of triplets. Remember a triplet is a group of three notes equaling the value of one note. A half note triplet equals one whole note or four notes. A quarter note triplet equals one half note. An eighth note triplet equals one quarter note. A sixteenth note triplet equals an eighth note and a thirty second note triplet equals one sixteenth note. Review all the material in books one through seven before attempting book eight in THE DRUM READER SERIES, This constant review will help you understand the material as you progress. Review all seven books before you start with book eight. Book Nine will start to develop your syncopation abilities in the various time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4 . . followed by 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8. Make sure you have a difference in sound between eighths and sixteenths and triplets, There is a tendency to play all these notes alike, They do not sound alike and should be played evenly at all times. If you have problems understanding triplets I would suggest you visit a good drum instructor, If you can't find a capable drum teacher in your area I would suggest you study with a melody man who can break tripiets down for you. REVIEW AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE STARTING WITH BOOK ONE UP TO BOOK FIGHT IN THE DRUM READER SERIES. addin ere Vee! Sem
