Kodama

for marimba and flute

Kodama () 1. a spirit living in a tree.

2. echo

The piece was partially inspired by Ruth Underwood's marimba playing in Frank
Zappa's Saint Alphozo's Pancake Breakfast.

Performance Notes
Marimba
Play over the strings.

Play on 1/3rd nodal points.

Play 2nd harmonics by placing one mallet in the middle of the bar.

Play 10th harmonics by placing one mallet at 1/5th of the bar.

One hand tremolo from above and below the bar on the bottom edge of the
bar while muting the bar with hand (or mallet). In m. 5, the muted hand
should be gradually released to a positioned finger on the middle of the bar
to produce the 2nd harmonics.

Flute
Accidentals:

I B

Approximately 1/4 tone flat or sharp

Approximately 1/6 tone flat or sharp

Harmonics:
Harmonics are indicated with small circle over the notehead or with a fingered note in
diamond notehead accompanied by the sounding pitch.

Multiphonics:
All the multiphonics are produced by overblowing, where the flutist uses a normal
fingering for the root note and tries to play multiple partials simultaneously.
Multiphonics are indicated as:

or as:

Breath noise:
Flute is asked to often go between different modes of blowing. The transitions are
indicated by arrows between the three modes of playing below.

tone
breathy tone (sometimes combined with overblowing to obtain the harmonics
above the fingered note)
breath (no tone)

tongue ram (without blowing, produce a pitch 7th below the written note; it can be
played while inhaling or exhaling)
