Introduction or Summary:: Political Changes/ War

Nayeli Padilla wrote a timeline assignment for her economics class covering American history from 1700-1946. The class was divided into four groups, each covering a different era, and Nayeli's group covered 1860-1920. Her group had to create a color-coded timeline with significant events from their assigned chapters, including changes in transportation, social changes, political events, laws, and more. Timeline Assignment
Introduction or Summary:
The book that was used for my economics class was broken into 4 sections: 1) The Colonial Era: 16701776; 2) The Revolutionary, Early National, and Antebellum Eras: 1176-1860; 3) The Reunification Era:
1860-1920; and 4) War, Depression, and War Again: 1914-1946. Furthermore, the class was split into four
groups with the corresponding sections. My group then had to create a timeline with significant events from
the book that were important or interesting and explained why. In addition, my group had to color code the
important topics. For example: Changes of Modes of Transportation, Social Changes, Political
Changes/ War, Money and Banking Issues, Technology, Acts/Laws/Court Decisions, Commerce, and
other. My group was 3 therefore we had chapters fourteen through twenty. My group members were Jack,
Ryan, Kyle, Clayton, Trevor, Gordon, and Chase. They each had an assigned chapter to get information for
each topic. Since there are eight of us including myself, my job was to put the timeline together in a
specific format. To get that specific format I had to download a program but I had technical difficulties and
unfortunately I was the only one that did not do the format correctly. I also had to upload the timeline in
Google drive so that my other classmates could get my section and add it to theirs. To conclude, when the
whole class was finished with the timeline we had to post either an attachment or a link so that the
dropdowns will show the other groups timeline section. These are the following links for the other groups
in the class:

Reflection Statement:
Although, I was responsible for putting the timeline together in a specific format, I also had to
read the chapters for our third test. I learned a lot from this assignment that made me think of how difficult
people back in the day had to live their lives. Something in specific that I learned and found interesting
were all the laws or acts that were passed during American history. For example, the Stock-Raising HomeStead Act of 1916 that allowed the homesteading of 640 acres of land suitable only for grazing purposes.
The steps I had to take for this assignment to be completed were looking at each date and placing it in a
correctly smooth matter. I had to be very specific with the dates. When I first began I was getting frustrated
because I would copy and paste a date with the corresponding information and then go back and had the
same date again that I could of copied and pasted before therefore I thought strategically and thought of an
idea. Since there were seven chapters I had to correctly format with dates I formatted the dates for each
chapter first then began creating the timeline and when I had copied and pasted the information I would
delete it from the chapter word page so that I wouldnt get confused and place the information twice.
Putting the information together was long rigorous work. in this course I learned a lot from other people,
inventions, wars, laws, money, strategic planning with stocks, etc. I could never finish the list of all the
things that Ive learned but there are many connections between the information that I learned with this
class and other previous SLCC and university courses that I have taken before. For example, in my
sociology class I learned about Frederick Douglas, a black man that was a slave and paid for his freedom
which I later watched a thirty minute video in my economics class about slavery which mentioned
Frederick Douglas. I already knew who he was because of my previous class. In addition, I learned about
the conquistadores in this class to my full knowledge due to my professors notes and videos. I took an

American History class at SLCC in the summer and there were many connections with this class about the
conquistadores. I understood them more in this class because I was able to visualize and write down the
information I learned. I really think the thirty minute videos that my economics professor made me watch
were very helpful and enjoyed watching them. I need to personally visualize things to learn and her videos
helped me remember the information better than before. After watching the videos I had to write down a
one page summary therefore after watching it I was able to explain what I leaned. This class didnt only
help me make connections with other classes but it also made me learn different techniques that can be
important for my future learning such as those videos with the summaries. I tried writing a summary after
each of my medical microbiology lectures with the notes that I had written down. I later read them each day
until my class and that helped me improve my test scores. To conclude, Ms. Schumacker is an excellent
professor that is understanding and will work with you to further your learning. I am quite glad I took this
economics course and learned a lot this semester.
Timeline (Group 3: 14-20)
Mid to late 1800s
Role of Women- the role of women in society and in the labor force changed
considerably over the period. Near midcentury, state after state passed laws giving women clearer title to
property, the right to engage in business, secure rights to their earnings, and property rights to patents and
intellectual property. By 1880, 2.5 million women, constituting 15% of the workforce, were at work outside
the home. By 1900, 5.3 million women, constituting 18% of the workforce, were at work outside the home.
By 1920, 8.5 million women, or one-fifth of the gainfully employed, were involved in some pursuit other
than homemaking.
