Have you ever?
In this amusing teaching activity, students create present perfect questions. The students
then play a true or false card game where they ask and answer questions using the present
perfect and past simple.
Before class, make one copy of the cards for every four students and cut as indicated.
Procedure
Divide the class into groups of four. Then, divide each group into pairs (Team A and B).
Give each pair a corresponding set of verb cards. Go through the past participles of the
verbs and write some example questions on the board.
Examples:
make made

write - written

Have you ever made a fire?

Have you ever written a love letter?

Have the teams write a present perfect question for each verb. Tell the students that the
questions should not be too simple or easy to answer. Go round and help the students
where necessary. When all the groups have finished, explain how to play the game.
Each team puts their verb cards face down in a pile in front of the other team. Teams take it
in turns to play.
Team A starts and picks up one of Team Bs verb cards from the top of the pile. Team B
then asks one of the players on Team A the corresponding 'Have you ever ?' question
from their list of questions.
The chosen player from the Team A must answer 'Yes, I have', regardless of whether its
true or not.
Team B then asks three follow-up questions using the past simple. After the three questions
have been asked, Team B decides if the players answer is true or false.
The player then reveals the truth. If Team B is correct, they win a point. The team with the
most points at the end of the game wins.
Example:
A: Have you ever made a fire?
B: Yes, I have.
A: Where did you make a fire?
B: At a campsite.
A: Why did you make a fire?
B: Because I was cold.
A: How did you make a fire?
B: With some wood and a lighter.
A: Hmmm. I think thats true.
B: No, its false.
