Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

Transitive and intransitive verbs differ based on whether they direct action toward an object. A transitive verb directs its action toward someone or something named in the sentence, called the object of the verb. An intransitive verb does not direct its action toward an object in the sentence. Examples provided are "Bill reads books about Asia" with books as the object of the transitive verb reads, and "Bill reads every night before going to bed" as an intransitive verb without an object.

Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

An action verb is transitive if it directs action toward someone or something named in the

sentence.
An action verb is intransitive if it does not direct toward someone or something named in

the sentence.
The receiver of the action of a transitive verb is called the object of the verb.

o TRANSITIVE : Bill reads books about Asia. (books is the object, or receiver of the
action)
o INTRANSITIVE : Bill reads every night before going to bed.
