Active and passive sentences

In active sentences, there is a subject (in this case Faye)


who is doing something (washing) to an object (the dishes):

Faye washed the dishes.


In passive sentences, the noun receiving the action (the dishes)
is the subject of the sentence, then the person doing it can be
included at the end (or may not be included at all):

The dishes were washed by Faye.


Cut out these sentences and arrange them into two groups,
active and passive.

1. The windows are cleaned by the window cleaner every Tuesday.


2. My dad cooks dinner for us every night.
3. The present was left by the door.

5. My sister is tidying up the dressing-up box.


6. Jane watched TV all evening.
7. Homework was given in by all the children.
8. The teacher shows the children how to dance.
9. The pencils have been counted and tidied away.
10. Farzia painted her room pink.
11. John kicked the football across the pitch.
12. The clothes were left in a dirty mess on the floor.
13. The window had been broken by a vandal.
14. My Dad fixed the computer for us.
Year 4 English

Answers: Sentences 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 12, 13 are passive. All the others are active.

4. The clothes were left out overnight.
