2. Simply we identify Linguistics as scientific study of language dealing with
different levels of language like Phonology, Semantics, Syntax etc. We have
no dispute regarding this description of Linguistics as a discipline. But,

terminologies, Widdowson (2000, p.5) presents the terms as;

problem can be reformulated by the direct application of concepts and terms
driving from linguistic enquiry itself... Applied Linguistics has to relate and
reconcile different representations of reality, including that of Linguistics
without excluding others.

perhaps even ameliorate social problems, while Linguistics Applied looks
inward, concerned not to solve language problems in the real worlds but to
explicate and test theories about language itself.
5. So, Linguistics Applied uses language data to develop our linguistic
knowledge about language itself, while Applied Linguistics studies a language
problem with a view to solve it (e.g. Aphasia, Speech Impairment etc.).
6. If a linguist want a validate a theory, it is L-A Linguistics Applied. But if he
wants to seek a practical answer to a language problem, he is working in the
domain of A-L Applied Linguistics.
7. Problem: The border between L-A and A-L is not marked and a demarcation is
not possible. It is a function that demonstrates how the linguistic information
is handled in its application.
8. Critical Applied Linguistics
Critical applied linguistics (CALx) is an interdisciplinary critical approach to English
applied linguistics. One of the central concerns in this approach is exposing the political
dimensions and power relations involved in mainstream applied linguistics, in areas like
language teaching, language policy and planning, language testing, language rights, and
so on.What is critical applied linguistics? Simply put, it is a critical approach to applied
linguistics.
