Taro River

The Taro is a 126 km long river located in northern Italy that flows through the province of Parma before joining the Po river. It has an average discharge of 30 cubic meters per second and drains an area of 2,026 square km through its tributaries such as the Ceno, Recchio, and Stirone rivers. In the past, the valley of the Taro was strategically important as it was crossed by the Via Francigena pilgrimage route between Rome and France.

kilometres(78mi)long.Itflowsalmostentirelyinthe
provinceofParma,westofthecityParma.TheTaro
flowsintothePonearGramignazzo,afrazioneofthe
comuneofSissa,northofParma.

theriver,occupiesanareaof2,026squarekilometres
(782sqmi).TheprincipalaffluentsoftheTaroarethe
Ceno,RecchioandStironeothersaretheGotraand
Tarodine.BoththeTaroandtheCenoriseonMonte
Penna,elevation1,735metres(5,692ft),inthe
ApennineMountainsontheborderbetweenthe
provincesofGenoaandParma.
Therivershowsstrongseasonalvariability.In
summeritcaneasilydry,whileinrainyperiodsitcan
reachadischargeof1,000cubicmetrespersecond
(35,000cuft/s):thisvaluecandoubleonrare
occasions,knownItalian:pienecentennali,
"centennialfloods",suchasthatofNovember9,
1982.
TheValdiTarowasofstrategicimportanceduringthe
MiddleAges,asitwastraversedbytheVia
Francigena,thepilgrimrouteandmainconnection
betweenRomeandFranceinthatera.
About20kilometres(12mi)oftherivercourse
betweenFornovodiTaroandPonteTaroconstitutes
theprotectedareaoftheParcofluvialeRegionaledel
Taro,theTaroregionalnaturalpark.Theareaofthe
parkincludestheriverbeditself,withnumerousislets
ofsandandgravelandwetlandareas,andsurrounding
areasofwoodland,scrubandcultivatedsoilithasa
widevarietyofvegetationandfauna.[1]
