Basic Statistical Procedures 3

This document provides instructions for performing a one-way ANOVA statistical analysis in Microsoft Excel. It explains that a one-way ANOVA compares the mean of more than two groups and describes the steps to set up the data and perform the analysis. These steps include entering the data with treatment groups in separate columns, selecting ANOVA: Single factor from the Data Analysis tool, choosing the input range which includes all the data and selecting "Columns" for grouping, and checking the "Labels in First Row" option. The result will display the mean and variance for each group, the F statistic to test if the group means are different, and the p-value to determine significance.

Basic Statistical Procedures and How to Compute (3)

Date 13th March 2011

Now we learn ANOVA (analysis of variance) for comparing mean of

groups (normally more than two groups). For theoretical term, this
procedure is called One-way ANOVA or Single factor ANOVA. (Ill discuss
Two-way ANOVA or General Linear Model ANOVA later)
Predictor Variable --------------------------------------------------------->
Variable
Treatment (A, B, C)
(kg/sqm)

Outcome

--------------------------------------------------------->

BMI

(20 subjects in each group)

Data entry is the same like t test. Data will be entering separate columns.

Then you click Data analysis. A new window named Data Analysis
appears with a lot of statistical analysis. Choose ANOVA: Single factor.

When you click OK, then data selection window will be appeared.

Unlike t test, you may see only one input range field.
Press your mouse cursor to the cell named Treatment A and drags
the cursor to end of data in three columns and release. $B$1:$D$21 will
be appearing in input range. (It means that you have been select from cell
1 of column B to cell 21 of column D).
Since we have been arranged data in each column, we must select
the Group by option to Columns.
Since, we select Name of the Groups in input range also, check the
Labels in First Row buttons and then press ok.

The result will be appeared on new sheet including Mean (Average)

and variance for each group, F statistics (ANOVA result) and p value. In
this example vale of F is 8.0665 and p value is 0.0008. It describe that, the
mean BMI in each group were different and it is statistically significant at p
< 0.001 level. (I will write what p values really mean in next article).
