Continuous Assessment 1-Handout

This document outlines a coursework assignment to analyze the impacts of connecting two 0.9MW wind turbines to an existing 33/11kV distribution network. The tasks include: 1) Analyzing the voltage profile of the network for different generation and demand scenarios. 2) Critically analyzing two impacts the wind generators will have on the original system operation, excluding voltage profile. 3) Proposing and contrasting three solutions to ensure the statutory voltage limits are not breached with or without embedded generation. The report is due by the end of week 8 and should be no longer than 4 pages, excluding results and figures. System data and the network configuration are provided in an Excel file.

CA1 Wind Energy and System Integration

1. Introduction
It is proposed to connect two 0.9MW wind turbines at the far end of the Castle
33/11kV radial network section at Myreshill No.2 secondary sub-station (see Fig 1.). The
network impedance and loading data are provided in the EXCEL file which can be found in
the module Blackboard site.
2. Tasks
(a) Analyse the voltage profile of the network for the following scenarios:
i
No generation from wind and Maximum system demand,
ii
Maximum generation and maximum system demand, and
iii
Maximum generation and minimum system demand.
(b) Critically analyse TWO of the impacts the proposed wind generators will have on the
operation of the original system, excluding the voltage profile.
(c) Propose and contrast three possible solutions to the network to make sure that the
statutory voltage limits are not breached with and without embedded generation.
Allocation of marks:- a-40%, b-30%, c-30%

3. Hand-in date: end of week 8

The core of your report should be no longer than 4 pages (excluding results/figures) and
also ensure title of coursework, date, your name and matric number are included on front
cover.
