INSTRUMENTS

Cymbals-percussioninstrumentcon
sisting of a circular flat or concave
metal plate that is struck with a
drumstick or is used in pairs struck
glancingly together.

Bass drum-
percussion instrument, the largest
and deepest-sounding member of
thedrumfamily, usually played with
a pair of large felt-headed sticks, or
beaters.

Castanets- percussion instrumentof


theclapperfamily, consisting of two
hollowed-out pear-shaped pieces of
hardwood, ivory, or other substance
hinged together by a cord. Castanets
are usually held in the hand and
struck together.

Snare drums-joined the orchestra nearly 200


years ago. It has two calfskin or plastic
drumheads stretched tightly over a hollow
metal frame. The top head is struck with
wooden drumsticks, and is called the batterhead. The bottom head, or snare-head has
catgut or metal wires called snares stretched
tightly across it. When this untuned drum is
struck on the top head, the snares produce a
characteristic sharp rattling sound as they
vibrate against the bottom head.

Gongs- are
percussioninstrumentsof either
definite or indefinite pitch, in the
form of a metal plate usually made of
brass or bronze.

Thetambourineis amusical
instrumentin thepercussion
familyconsisting of a frame, often
ofwoodorplastic, with pairs of
smallmetaljingles, called "zils".

Vibraphone- also calledVibraharp,


orVibes,percussion instrumentthat
has tuned metal bars and is similar in
shape to axylophone. Felt or wool
beaters are used to strike the bars,
giving a soft, mellow tone quality.
Suspended vertically below each
aluminum bar is a tubular, tuned
resonator that sustains the tone
when the bar is struck.

Kettle drums-percussion
instrumentin which a membrane is
stretched over a hemispheric or
similar-shaped shell and held taut,
usually by a hoop with rope lacings,
adjusting screws, or various
mechanical devices.

A Bell Lyreis a musical instrument


belonging to the percussion family,
and is essentially a more portable
version of theglockenspiel, making it
a popular addition to a marching
band or militaryband setup.

Xylophones-from
Greekxylonandphon, wood
and sound, percussion
instrument consisting of a set of
graduated, tuned wooden bars
supported at nodal (nonvibrating)
points and struck with sticks or
padded mallets.

Chimes-Chimesare a tuned
instrument consisting of a set of 12
to 18 metal tubes hung from a metal
frame. The metal tubes range from 1
to 2 inches in diameter and from 4
to 6 feet in length. The chimes, or
tubular bells, are struck with a mallet
and sound like church bells when
played. The longer the length of tube
that is struck, the lower the pitch that
