Perform a Netinstall on a
MikroTik RouterBoard

Preparation:
If you have a RouterBoard without a serial port (i.e. RB750 Series) you can skip ahead
to step 6 otherwise start at step 1.
1. Download and run Putty,
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
2. Configure PuTTy for MikroTik Serial access (Ensure you select the correct COM
port for your serial port mine is COM1):

3. Plug your serial cable into your RouterBoard. Click open in PuTTy then power
your RouterBoard. You only have about 2-3 seconds to hit any key to enter
setup so be quick!
4. Before proceeding complete steps 6-9.
5. Follow the steps bellow and then press x to exit setup and reboot the router:

6. Download Netinstall from MikroTik http://www.mikrotik.com/download.html


7. Download your corresponding RouterOS version (i.e. Netinstall 4.17 and
RouterOS 4.17).

8. Run Netinstall and select Net booting. Enable the boot server and give it an
IP Address on the same subnet as your PC / Network.

9. Connect the RouterBoard Ethernet port 1 to your PC / Network.


10. Hold the reset button whilst plugging in the power to the device. (Skip to step
12 if you started from step 1 using serial interface).
11. Release the reset button when the ACT led goes out (it will flash for a while
the go out). A few seconds later you should see Ethernet port 1 led come on
and your device will show up in Netinstall.
12. Browse to the correct folder for it to show in your list of packages.

13. Select your router labelled nstreme, select the correct RouterOS package
you have downloaded and click install.

14. Reboot.

Firmware Upgrade:
15. Login to your Router via winbox and open a New Terminal.
16. Enter: system routerboard print (to check firmware version)
system routerboard upgrade (to upgrade firmware)
system reboot (reboot for changes to take effect)
