Separation Process Tutorial 1

The document provides a problem description for a humidification/dehumidification tutorial involving cooling and dehumidifying moist warm air in a dehumidification column using water. Specifically, moist air at 85°C dry-bulb and 45°C wet-bulb temperature entering at a rate of 4800 kg/m2h is to be cooled to a 30°C wet-bulb temperature using 25°C water at a flow rate 1.4 times the minimum required. The mass transfer coefficient is given as 2150 kg/m3h. Students are asked to calculate the height of the tower required.

Tutorial EKC 316 Separation Process

Topic: Humidification/Dehumidification

Problem 1:
Moist warm air is to be cooled and dehumidified to a wet-bulb temperature of 30C
using water of 25C in a dehumidification column. The air enters the tower with a drybulb temperature of 85C and wet-bulb temperature of 45C at 4800 kg/m2h rate. The
overall gas phase mass transfer coefficient is estimated to be 2150 kg/ m 3h. The flow
rate of water is 1.4 times the minimum. Calculate height of the tower.
