2.5 Scatter Plots and Line of Best Fit

This document provides definitions and examples related to scatter plots and lines of best fit. It defines key terms like scatter plots, line of best fit, prediction equation, correlation, and correlation coefficient. It then provides two examples to demonstrate how to analyze scatter plot data by drawing the line of best fit, determining the equation of the line, and making predictions based on the line of best fit.

Section 2.5 – Scatter Plots/Line of Best Fit
DEFINTIONS
Scatter plots: Is a set of data graphed as ordered pairs in a coordinate plane.
Line of Best Fit or Regression Line: A line that lies as close as possible to all points
Prediction Equation or Regression Equation: An equation of the line of best fit.
Correlation: The amount of association between two or more items (numerical values)
Correlation Coefficient: Denoted r, is a number between -1 and +1 that measures how well
data points are line up.
There is a Positive correlation: (0< r ≤ 1) between variables x and y when y tends to increase as x increases.
There is a Negative Correlation: (-1 ≤ r < 0) between variables x and y when y tends to decrease as x increases.

EX1. How can the relation between the variables in the given scatter plot be best described

(a) Weak positive correlation (a) Weak positive correlation

(b) Strong positive correlation (b) Strong positive correlation
(c) Correlation approximately 0 (c) Correlation approximately 0
(d) Strong negative correlation (d) Strong negative correlation
EX2.
The table shows the percent increase in the sale of Ice cream in the US.

a.) Draw a scatter plot to model the data.

b.) Draw the best fitting line to this data. If t represents the year, with t = 6 corresponding to year
to 1986

c.) Determine the equation of the line and write it in slope intercept form________________________________

d.) Predict the % increase in the sale of ice cream in the US in the year 1997._________________

ST2.
The table below gives the number of hours a local baseball team spent on batting practice during each week and the
number of hits they had in games that weekend. Use this information for the following problems

a.)Make a scatter plot on the graph below. Draw a line of best fit

Number of Hours Number of Hits

0 2

3 4

5 5

7 8

9 11

10 10

b.) Identify two key points on your graph and write them on this space__________________________________

c.) Determine the equation of the line and write it in slope intercept form________________________________

d.) Predict the number of hits following a week when 15 hours were spent on batting practice
