Pathophysiology of Congestive Heart Failure: Predisposing Factors Precipitating/Aggravating Factors

Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart can no longer pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. It develops from predisposing factors like age, family history, or precipitating factors such as coronary artery disease or hypertension. The initial event weakens the heart's pumping ability, stimulating compensatory mechanisms that lead to sodium and water retention. Over time, the weakened heart further deteriorates and becomes unable to maintain adequate cardiac output, resulting in blood backing up in the lungs or periphery and symptoms of left or right-sided heart failure.
