The Mole and The Volume

The document discusses the relationship between moles, volume, mass, and number of particles for gases. It states that at room temperature and 1 atmosphere of pressure, 1 mole of gas occupies a volume of 24 dm3, known as the molar volume. The number of moles of gas can be calculated by taking the volume of gas in cm3 and dividing by the molar volume of 2400 cm3. Additionally, the mass of a gas in grams can be determined by multiplying the number of moles by the gas's molar mass. Avogadro's constant, which is 6.02x1023 particles/mole, allows conversion between moles of a gas and its number of particles.

MOLAR VOLUME OF GAS
• AT A ROOM TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE OF 1
ATMOSPHERE, 1 MOLE OF GAS OCCUPIES 24 dm3 or 24 X
1 000 cm3.
• THIS VOLUME OF GAS IS CALLED THE MOLAR VOLUME.
• THE NUMBER OF MOLES OF GAS IN A CONTAINER:
VOLUME OF GAS (cm3) AT A ROOM TEMPERATURE
AND PRESSURE OF 1 ATMOSPHERE
2 400
• VOLUME OF GAS (cm3) = NUMBER OF MOLES X

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MOLES OF A GAS AND ITS VOLUME
TO DETERMINE THE VOLUME OF A
GAS FROM THE NUMBER OF MOLES

• THE NUMBER OF A GAS CAN BE CALCULATED FROM

THE NUMBER OF MOLES OF THE GAS.

VOLUME
OF = NUMBER OF MOLES X MOLAR
GAS
MOLAR VOLUME AND
AVOGADRO’S CONSTANT
• THE MOLAR VOLUME OF A GAS IS THE VOLUME OF 1 MOLE OF THE GAS.
• A FIXED VOLUME OF ANY GAS ALWAYS CONTAINS THE SAME NUMBER OF
MOLECULES.
• THIS IS CALLED AVOGADRO’S LAW. THIS LAW STATES THAT EQUAL
VOLUMES OF ALL GASSES CONTAIN THE SAME NUMBER OF MOLECULES
UNDER THE SAME TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE.
• FROM THIS LAW WE CAN CONCLUDE THAT 1 MOLE OF ANY GAS HAS THE
SAME VOLUME. (UNDER THE SAME TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE)
• EXAMPLE:
1 MOLAR VOLUME OF CARBON DIOXIDE HAS THE SAME NUMBER OF
MOLECULES AS 1 MOLAR VOLUME OF HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN.

TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF PARTICLES
OF A GAS FROM THE NUMBER OF MOLES

• THE MASS OF 1 MOLE OF GAS IS ITS RELATIVE

MOLECULAR MASS EXPRESSED IN GRAMS.
• 1 MOKE OF GAS CONTAINS AVOGADRO’S
NUMBER OF PARTICLES.
• THE NUMBER OF PARTICLES OF GAS=NUMBER
OF MOLES X AVOGADRO’S CONSTANT
TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF
PARTICLES OF A GAS FROM THE VOLUME
• THE MOLAR VOLUME AT ROOM TEMPERATURE
AND PRESSURE OF 1 ATMOSPHERE IS 24 dm3.
1 MOLE VOLUME AT s.t.p IS 22.4 dm3.
• 1 MOLE OF GAS CONTAINS 6.02 X 10^23
PARTICLES
• NUMBER OF MOLES OF GAS = VOLUME OFGAS ÷
MOLAR VOLUME.
• THE NUMBER OF MOLECULES OF GAS = NUMBER
OF MOLES OF GAS X 6.02 X 10^23
