UEME1143 Dynamcis 201101 Assignment

1. Students will form groups of up to four people to select a piece of machinery related to their field of study. They will analyze the machinery to determine two kinematics equations and two kinetics equations that can be used in its design or to calculate its dynamics. 2. The group will design and conduct an experiment to validate the equations from part one by comparing theoretical and experimental results. They will discuss the results obtained from both methods. 3. As an example, a group chose to study a bicycle. They determined kinematics equations for the drive train and brake mechanism kinetics equations. They then conducted experiments to validate the equations.

Assignment (10%)

Arrange in a group of maximum four (4), prepare a report on the following assignments:

1. Select machinery or lab equipment related to your field of study, i.e. mechanical, civil,
chemical, biomedical etc that have some moving mechanisms. Conduct a study and analysis
on the selected machinery/equipment to determine two (2) kinematics and two (2) kinetics
equations that can be used to design or calculate the dynamics of the moving mechanism.
(6 marks)

2. Design and conduct an experiment to prove the validity of your equation derived from part
one (1) by comparing the theoretical and experimental results. You may use tachometer,
measuring tape, ruler, spring balance, weighting machine etc available in the laboratory.
Discuss the results obtained by both theoretical and experimental methods.
(4 marks)

Example: Choosing a bicycle as the product to study/research.

a. Kinematics equations:
Determine kinematics equations used for the drive train of the bicycle.
i) Calculate/form the relationship between velocity and acceleration of pedal crank
arm and the front chain rings. Specify the dimensions used such as gear size.
ii) Calculate the angular velocity of the real wheel when the bike is cycled at 20 rpm
for front chain ring. Specify the all the dimensions or specifications used such as
gear ratio.
b. Kinetic equations:
Determine kinetic equations for the brake mechanism.
i) Assume a pull force from the cable is 3kg, calculate the normal reaction exerted onto
the side of the rim.
Determine kinetic equation for the bicycle’s wheels reaction force.
ii) Calculate the normal reaction at the front wheel and real wheel when a subject with
50kg in weight sits on the bicycle.
c. Prove of equations used:
i) Measure the angular velocity of the front chain ring and the speed of the real wheel
to prove the equation derived from a.ii). Compare the results.
ii) Measure the pull force from the hand brake and normal reaction on the wheel.
