CREATING A SHORTCUT TO ACCESS THE CD ROM DRIVE


Using the mouse, right click the KDE desktop on the Linux machine. This will display a sticky
menu as shown in diagram 1.

From the sticky menu select the option Create New Æ CD/DVD-ROM Device.... This will
invoke the Properties for CDROM-Device dialog box as shown in diagram 2.2.

The first tab in the Properties for CDROM-Device dialog box is the General tab. This tab
captures the name / label for the shortcut which will appear on the KDE desktop.

After entering an appropriate label move on to the Permission tab. This tab captures the
Linux user-privileges for device operations performed via the shortcut. Refer to diagram 2.3.

Select all three permissions (i.e. Read, Write and Execute) for User, Group and Others.

Proceed to the third tab in the Properties for CDROM-Device dialog box.

The third tab named Device captures the device bound to the shortcut. Select the option
/dev/cdrom (/mnt/cdrom) and click to continue.

A shortcut for accessing the CD-ROM device will be created and appears on the desktop as
shown in diagram 2.5.
