The Christmas Spirit: Story Mapping My Prairie Christmas Grade Level: Fifth grade Time: 45 minutes Materials: My Prairie

Christmas by Brett Harvey story map NCTE Standards: -Standard One: Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works. -Standard Two: Students read a wide range of literature from many periods in many genres to build an understanding of the many dimensions (e.g., philosophical, ethical, aesthetic) of human experience. -Standard Three: Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics). -Standard Twelve: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information). Student Objectives: 1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of My Prairie Christmas (Including setting, characters, plot, and themes) by completing a story map. 2. Students will draw and discuss connections between the text and their own lives by considering their attitudes and reactions to the themes and situations in the text. Teaching Procedure (S=students) Introduction (10 min) 1. Ask S questions. They will write down their answers, and then discuss in groups. a. Where do usually celebrate the holidays? How would you feel if you had to celebrate them somewhere else? b. Have you ever had to move or do you know someone who had to move? How did you (or the person who had to move) feel? c. What are some traditions you have during the holidays? How would you feel if you couldnt do those things any more?

Development (30 min) 1. Read My Prairie Christmas aloud to the class. 2. Have S work on their story maps as a class but make sure that they leave room for more notes because we will discuss the map as a class. 3. Ask for suggestions for what to fill in on the story map. 4. Fill in the story map as a class, using document camera. Conclusion (5-10 min) 1. Have students revisit their questions from the introduction, and think and discuss how they might have felt in Rabbits situation, or what they might have done. 2. After groups discuss, ask for volunteers to share with the class. Assessment -- All students will participate in their tables group discussions (teachers observation) -- Students complete story map (collect story map)
