COURSE OBJECTIVES This is an elective course, designed for senior undergraduate students. A thorough knowledge of basic concepts, theory, principals and components involved in the physical layer of optical communication is given in the course. PRE-REQUISITES Electromagnetic theory Communication Systems Digital Communications TEXTBOOK Gerd Keiser, Optical Fiber Communications, 4th edition, Tata McGraw-Hill, 2008. REFERENCES/ ADDITIONAL READINGS Ghatak, K. Thyagarajan, Introduction to Fiber optics, Cambridge University Press G. P Agarwal, Fiber-optic Communication systems, 3rd edition. COURSE CONTENTS

Overview (lecture 1) o Historical Development o Systems Overview o The Electromagnetic and Data-Rate spectra o Optical Fiber Advantages over Copper o Some commercial standards in optical communications Basic optics (lectures 2-4) o Origin of light: ray theory, o Diffraction and interference o Polarization and polarization devices o Jones vectors and polarization modes Optical Fiber Light-guides (lectures 5-6) o Ray Theory o Mode Theory o Step and Graded Index Fibers Power Launching and Coupling (lectures 7-10) o Numerical Aperture o Fiber Mode Theory

Signal Degradation in Optical Fibers (lectures 11-13) o Attenuation and Dispersion Optical Sources (lectures 14-17) o LEDs and Laser Diodes Photodetectors (lectures 18-21) o The pin and Avalanche Photodetectors Sources of Noise in Optical Receivers (lecture 22) Digital Transmission Systems (lectures 23-25) o Point to point link o Link-Power and Rise-time Budgets o Noise and Chirping WDM Components and Concepts (lectures 26-28) o WDM, DWDM, OTDM o Couplers, Multiplexers, Optical Filters o MZI couplers and tuners o Fiber Bragg Grating filters Optical Networks (lectures 29-32) o Topologies(Architecture), o SDH/SONET o Optical Add/Drop Multiplexing o WDM Network examples with mitigation transmission o Intro to Non-Linear Effects like FWM

PROJECTS, QUIZES AND ASSIGNMENTS: The course would have regular quizzes/assignments. In the project, the students are required to select a recent research paper in the field of optical communication, read and study it thoroughly and then present it before the class. The basic idea is to introduce new topics in optical communication to the students. GRADING POLICY: Assignments: Project Quizzes Midterm: Final: 10% 10% 15% 20% 45%
