Lecture 3

The document discusses different types of cross drainage works for canals, including aqueducts, super passages, and siphons. Aqueducts carry canals over drainages and use open channel flow, while siphons use pipe flow but also carry canals over drainages. Super passages carry canals under drainages, with open channel flow used in super passages and pipe flow in canal siphons. Level crossings are used when drainages and canals are at similar levels, while inlet and outlet facilities are for small drainage flows at the same level as canals.

3. Cross Drainage Works

3.1 Introduction
The alignment of a canal invariably meets a number of natural streams (drains) and other structures such as roads and railways, and may sometimes have to cross valleys. Cross-drainage works are the structures which make such crossings possible. They are generally very costly, and should be avoided if possible by changing the canal alignment and/or by diverting the drains.

3.2 Aqueduct/Siphon Aqueduct
An aqueduct is a cross-drainage structure constructed where the drainage flood level is below the bed of the canal. In case of aqueduct, canal flows over the drainage and the flow in the barrel is open channel flow In Siphon Aqueduct also, canal flows over the drainage but the flow in the barrel is pipe flow If the drainage discharge is heavily silt laden a silt ejector should be provided at the upstream end of the siphon aqueduct; a trash rack is also essential if the stream carries floating debris which may otherwise choke the entrance to the aqueduct.

3.3 Super Passage/Canal Siphon In super passage, the canal is taken below the drainage and the flow in the canal is open channel flow In canal siphon, the canal is taken below the drainage and the flow in canal barrel is pipe flow

3.4 Level Crossing/Inlet/Inlet and Outlet
Level crossing facilities are provided when both the drain and the canal run at more or less the same level. This is more frequently used if either of the flows occurs for a short period (e.g. flash floods in the drain); in addition, the mixing of the two bodies of water must also be acceptable(quality considerations). The disadvantage is that an operator is required to regulate the flow

3. Cross Drainage Works

Inlet and outlet facility is provided when the drainage and canal are at the same level and the flow in the drainage is small
