Notion of Mathematical Model: Work Done By

The document discusses different types of mathematical models: 1) Black box and white box models - black box models have no prior information available while white box models have all necessary information available. 2) Linear and nonlinear, deterministic and probabilistic, static and dynamic models - nonlinear models can exhibit chaos and irreversibility while deterministic models uniquely determine variable states and probabilistic models use probability distributions. 3) Static models do not account for time while dynamic models use difference or differential equations to represent changes over time.

NOTION OF MATHEMATICAL MODEL

WORK DONE By,

DIVYA.K ESAKIMUTHU GAYTHRI GOPINATH.R. HEMALATHA.M

The process of developing a mathematical model is termed mathematical modelling.

Economics, Psychology, Sociology and Political science

Mathematical modeling problems are often classified into two types.

Black box White box

BLACK BOX:

A black-box model is a system of where there is no priori information available.

WHITE BOX:

A white-box model (also called glass box or clear box) is a system where all necessary information is available.

Linear vs Nonlinear
Deterministic vs Probabilistic

Static vs Dynamic

Mathematical models are usually composed by variables, which are abstractions of quantities of interest in the described systems, and operators that act on these variables, which can be algebraic operators, functions, differential operators, etc. Nonlinearity, even in fairly simple systems, is often associated with phenomena such as chaos and irreversibility

A Deterministic model is one in which every set of variable states is uniquely determined by parameters in the model and by sets of previous states of these variables. A Probabilistic model, randomness is present, and variable states are not described by unique values, but rather by probability distributions.

A static model does not account for the element of time. Dynamic models typically are represented with difference equations or differential equations.
