WHY IS THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE?

What is English? According to the Oxfords dictionary, the word English relates to England or its people or language. English is the principal language used in many countries such as Greet Britain, The United States, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. These are all European countries. But today, English has emerged as an international language or a global language in the world. So, the domination of the English language globally is undeniable. English is the language of diplomacy in international communication, business, tourism, education, science, computer technology, and mass media, which includes printed and electronic media. For most Asians, English Language is not their mother tongue but a second language or third language. English is spoken by more people than the other languages, and is the native language of around hundred million people in the world. English is the most commonly used language among foreign language speakers. Throughout the world, when people with different languages come together they commonly use English to communicate with each other. Even though English is not their native language most governments select English as an adopted language. For example, the education system in Malaysia has placed English as the second language with a great emphasis given to strengthen it. Malay language remains the national language. In China, for instance, the people learn in Chinese language as well as in the English language. English is also used widely in the business world. Important business documents and agreements are written and signed in English. English provides the convenience for those from different countries to communicate and close business deals successfully. Besides, spoken English is used as the medium of instruction in institutes of higher learning. Ones proficiency in the language is gauged in interviews conducted in the English Language whether it is an interview for a scholarship or a job interview. Moreover, politicians also have to know how to speak English well because they have to interact with delegates from foreign countries in English. This will help to enhance the bilateral relationship between the countries. If they are not proficient in English, translators are used. However, ones thoughts and spoken words cannot be accurately translated verbatim. In fact, a minor error may lead to misunderstanding or conflict among the countries. That is why English is an international language because it is important to everyone no matter what background they come from. English is easy to learn because is just based on an alphabet, and compared to other languages; it can be learned fairly quickly. Learning English can be fun too. For instance, what letter of the alphabet is an insect? The answer is b (bee). Various puns and idioms in the English Language make learning the language a lot more fun than what most people assume. There are numerous quotes, poems and other genres written in the language which add flavor and beauty to the language. Today, English also widespread largely due to the fact that it is used so heavily in television, film, music, and internet. In fact, around 70% web pages were used in English although the rest are used in the other language but there normally tend to have English translate for those who not able to understand the language. Most of the famous movies and music genres are produced in English which in turn, attracts the public to find using the language interesting and entertaining. Educators, who are creative, use songs in their classrooms to help students learn pronunciation and word order. This makes the lessons more interesting and the songs are universal in the sense that, they can be used in any part of the word. This is also why English has become an international language. Using English when you travel to the other countries is convenient and it will make your trip a breezy one as you wont end up facing problems asking for directions or finding out something important from the locals. For example, in Paris , French is the official language and if one travels to there maybe they able to speak a few words in French like merci which means thank you and desole which means sorry. However, it would definitely be an uphill task to construct perfect sentences in French, hence, visitors there can use English as a neutral language to communicate with the locals. So, English is the main language in tourism which automatically makes it an international language. In the 21st century, English has become a lingua franca of the world due to its significance as the language of

the internet. English is widely and commonly used in almost all the social networking websites, personal websites, educational websites and blogs. Besides, software programmers are in English. To keep abreast with the advancement in science and technology, it is imperative to acknowledge the importance of the English Language as not merely as the white mans language but a language that is used internationally.
