IITB Develops Mobile Social Networking Platform IIT Bombay in association with telecom firm Tata Teleservices has developed a new mobile social networking platform(MSNP) that will help service providers to develop personalised applications and send messages to users in the network based on their preferences such as demographic profile or interests.

The Institute boasts of state-of-the-art instructional facilities with lecture halls and auditoriums equipped with excellent audio-visual aids. The newly inaugurated Victor Menezes Convention Centre (VMCC) hosts an auditorium, lecture halls, a conference hall, and facilities that offer a world class venue for meetings, conferences and other events. World-class Library
IIT Bombay has identified its potential to be a creator of new knowledge in different branches of technology and sciences. To aid this, the Central Library of IIT Bombay is responsible for acquisition and dissemination of information in various forms. The library has a total collection of over 400,000 books and subscribes to over 1400 print journals.
Research Facilities
IIT Bombay provides excellent research facilities to its students to carry out research as a part of their academics. The institute hosts joint research collaborations with a number of reputed industrial organizations like ONGC, Applied Materials, Yahoo!, Xilinx, Tata Teleservices, Intel, Tata Infotech, Tata Consultancy Services, Texas Instruments and Cummins. The faculty is involved in complex industrial R&D and consulting projects. Through their academic project work under the guidance of the faculty, the students get excellent exposure to such projects. Academic programmes
The different programmes at IIT Bombay combine, in right amounts, building the fundamentals and providing an exposure to real industry problems. In addition, the students can also participate in the current research underway at the institute through programmes like Undergraduate Research Award (URA). The students also have an option of studying for a semester in one of the universities abroad with whom IIT Bombay has an agreement, to gain additional exposure. Doctoral Programme
The Ph.D. programme offered by the institute requires an original doctoral thesis that should result in a significant contribution to that field. The aim of this programme is to keep pace with the expanding frontiers of knowledge and provide research training relevant to the countrys technological, social and economic objectives. The average duration of the programme is 4-5 years.
Admission procedure
The Institute provides the best academic experience in the country, and it ensures that its students are also of exceptionally high quality. Admission to IIT Bombay is granted through its various entrance examinations, which are stringent enough to ensure that only the best students from across the country secure admission. Student Activities
At IIT Bombay, students have a multiple opportunities to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to ensure an all round development of their personality. Students help in organizing various events and festivals on campus thereby honing their interpersonal and managerial skills. With this handson training, IIT Bombay students find it very easy to be effective team players as well as team leaders in the professional arena. activities. The current scene at the institute provides a world of opportunity to excel in wide range of activities. There is an aeromodelling club, an electronics club, an astronomy club, a robotics club and a web and coding club. The students also produce Insight and Awaaz, the institute newsletters which keep students up-to-date with the happenings on campus.

Placement Office
The Placement Office is responsible for campus placement at IIT Bombay. The Professor- in-Charge, the Assistant Placement Officer, the Placement Office staff and the student representatives handle various crucial tasks in the office like reaching out to companies, scheduling & executing placement-related activities and carrying out all official communication with recruiters and with students. The team strives to strike a match between recruiter expectations and student aspirations. The team of student representatives consists of the Placement Managers who coordinate the activities of the other student members and ensure compliance with various Institute policies; Company Coordinators who execute coordination with the recruting organisations; and Department Placement Coordinators who steer student preparedness and employability enhancement initiatives. The Placement Office is well-equipped with excellent infrastructure to support every stage of the placement process. The facilities include: End-to-end online system for recruiters and students Auditoriums to conduct workshops and pre-placement talks Tele-interview rooms Fully computerized and air conditioned office Infrastructure to support online and written screening tests Video-conferencing facility
Placement Procedure
To support the placement process, the Placement Office has an effective online system in place. The procedure for campus placement follows the following plan:

A Company/Organisation fills a Job Announcement Form (JAF) containing details of the job and the offer using their online account. JAFs can also be sent either by post or email to Placement Office, IIT Bombay (placement@iitb.ac.in & placementcell@iitb.ac.in).
Placement Office allots dates for recruitment procedure by considering factors like student preferences, job profile, etc.
The Placement Office also coordinates the signing of offer letters by students who have been selected to ensure that they reach the company/organisation as early as possible.

If the company/organisation is interested in conducting a Pre-Placement Talk (PPT) they can send a request along with the preferred dates.
Organisations can shortlist students and inform the Placement Office in advance of the date of the interview. The organisations are also requested to maintain a waitlist of students who can be interviewed in the event of non-availability of some of the shortlisted students.

The JAF is made available online to the eligible students, along with any other information furnished by company/organisation.
Organisations visit the campus on the allotted date(s) and conduct tests and/or interviews according to their recruitment process.

The placement season begins in the month of July and goes on upto June of following year. However, the Placement Office conducts several activities throughout the year for the benefit of students. Some of the activities are as follows:
Resume verification
All claims made by students in resumes submitted for campus placement are duly verified by the Placement Office. The verification standards are uniform throughout the Institute.

IIT Bombay is the most preferred academic institute to a large number of organizations for recruiting outstanding employees with high potential as their future leaders. These organizations, from both within India and abroad, are excited about the capability, intellect and the professional readiness displayed by our students. The most frequently cited accolades from these organizations regarding our students include their ability to learn quickly, their versatility, their performance as team players, their excellent analytical skills, and most important the positive attitude that they bring to their jobs. The institute offers campus placement for students graduating with Bachelor of Technology, Master of Technology, Dual Degree (Bachelor of Technology + Master of Technology), Master of Design, Master of Science, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. More than 250 organizations participated in IIT Bombay campus placement during the year 2010-11. For the year 2011-12, more than 1400 students are expected to be available through the placement process and we expect more than 300 organizations to participate in our campus placement program. IIT Bombay has excellent facilities for campus recruiters and we are pleased to make them available to the participating organizations. We follow a simple and transparent placement policy, and its details are available on our website. We are taking special initiatives to connect our Ph.D students to interested organizations through a separate website, as most of our Ph.D students are serious about pursuing careerse in research and development.
