COURSE PURPOSE
The Life Skills approach to experiential training has proven to be a well received and an effective training method that empowers individuals to take control of their lives both personally and professionally. This training offers a Coaching Certificate based on the Saskatchewan NewStart Model, which is provided through Personal Quest Training. It also offers the opportunity, upon obtaining the Life Skills Coach certificate, to enroll in a nationally recognized accreditation process. This 240 hour intensive training program is presented in three phases and gives the Coach trainees the personal awareness, theory and skill practice to effectively coach in organizations in a wide variety of areas. This training program has been designed and developed using a holistic approach and addresses the changing dynamics and challenges of both urban and rural communities of Northern British Columbia.

COURSE GOALS
By the end of the program, the trainee will: a) have completed a number of self assessment tools to identify his/her own leadership and counseling skills; b) have learned a number of problem solving techniques and practiced teaching them to peers; c) have learned the theory behind adult education, the NewStart model, and learning styles; d) have learned a number of group dynamic theories and related them to the group experience; e) have designed and delivered a lesson using the NewStart model; obtaining peer group feedback; f) have practiced a number of group counseling techniques; g) have learned the basics of curriculum and program development and proposal writing; h) have learned about community development theory and related it to his/her own community experience; i) have presented research finding on a specific theory or related theory and how it relates to life skills; j) understand the professionalism, responsibilities and ethics of life skills coaches.

RECOMMENDED TRAINEE CHARACTERISTICS

Grade 12 or equivalent reading ability Personal maturity and stability Completed Questionnaire (in Student package must be returned to CNC Continuing Education Department prior to course start) Copy of Current Resume (bring to first day of class) Personal Autobiography (bring to first day of class) Character References (3) (bring to first day of class) *All applicants require a personal / telephone interview to fully determine their understanding of the course requirements.

The four aspects of our nature (the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual) can be developed when we have a vision of what is possible and when we use our volition to change our actions and our attitudes so that they will be closer to our vision of a happy healthy human being.

COURSE DESIGN AND ACTIVITIES
Course Design This training program is presented in three phases over a period of 5 months. The classroom hours are as indicated on the front page. There may be some evening sessions and the trainers are available evenings for personal and professional development and review. There is a practical experience component to the program and trainees are required to complete this expectation between the second and third parties. The trainees are required to complete a learning journal for the duration of the program. The training opportunity is designed using the above three phase model to allow trainees to attend and maintain their current employment with as little disruption as possible. Course Activities Instructional design is experiential learning; participation based and developed using the Saskatchewan NewStart Model. Specific teaching and learning activities include individual and group projects, community development activities, cooperative learning activities and include content specific workshop presentations. The use of video tape recordings and role plays are instructional tools that are used throughout the training experience.

Life Skills Coach Training Certification Requirements for Completion Maintain full attendance and participation; Design and Deliver Life Skills Session(s) for trainee group; Gather information for research project and present findings; Complete learning journals through out training; Participate in evaluation process. Trainee Evaluations will be completed at the completion of each Phase of Training and upon completion of requirements as listed above.
