Interview With Winston Damarill, CEO of Morphlabs

Winston Damarillo is interviewed about being a technopreneur in the Philippines. He discusses how cloud computing has made it easier to start tech companies. He wants to create a Silicon Valley-like entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Philippines by implementing successful concepts with local flavor. This would include improving education, developing financing options for startups, and fostering mentors and venture capitalists. While the Philippines has a large business process outsourcing industry, more can be done to create software companies and build local products. The government is working to fight corruption and boost the economy, but more support is needed to develop the entrepreneurial culture and retain human capital within the country.

v=a2HzVxQpy38 7:50 - Silicon Valley in the Philippines 10:20 - Entrepreneurship ecosystem 15:11 - IT / Engineers employed by foreign companies (Human Capital) 16:25 - Accelerators as tools to boost ecosystem 20:30 - Infrastructure has to be done 21:04 - Ecosystem composed of mentors and venture capitalists 22:10 - What the government has done for entreps 5:44-6:03 I think its actually even easier now, youve got cloud computing that makes the development of startups like Rappler easy to implement. You dont need to build servers and data centers and all that stuff to do it. Youve got the power of global marketing any product that makes sense and you can sell it on the internet. 6:16-6:20 Its even easier now to be a start-up, its even more competitive now to be a start-up, its even more important to have passion in becoming one and becoming an entrepreneur. 7:48 Taking the formula that has worked like the Silicon valley and and using catalyst implementiung the entrepen local and regional flavor to it and how to im[plement the successful concepts in 8:27-8:28 Most important advocacy is economic wealth propagation. We want the country to be wealthy. We believe that the way to get there is through technology. What needs to be fixed in the Philippines? Educational system needs to be fixed. - add Masterals and PHD practitioners in the Philippines Entrepreneurial ecosystem - We need to start developing an ecosystem that starts with idea makers, idea and execution, financing that makes the execution a reality, and companies that would basically scale those ideas into industries. - Its an effort needed to be done in parallel. Its an effort needed to be done inward so we should self-realize that we want to do this as Filipinos in the country with the help of Filipinos that are not in the country. Where do we stand in terms of technology globally? - Globally, I think were not in the map yet. The Filipinos are not yet known to be technologists. Asia, maybe. ASEAN, we have an opportunity to be a leader. - We have a BPO sector that is non-existent in the past 10 years, and now we are the market leader. And now we are no. 1 globally in the BPO sector. - We need to step that up. We need to move to other sectors, non-voice BPOs, to soft ware and eventually to building products in the country.

Legislations and Policies in the Philippines - The administration is visible in ending corruption. - The confidence in investing in the Philippines is extremely high. - Boosters o Continuously improve our educational system Culture and Human Capital - If you look at our software industry, the percentage of Filipino software engineers employed by non-Filipino companies doing subcontracting work is high. More than 80% are not employed in a Filipino company, nor building Filipino products, so the retention of income to our local economy is not that great. - I have Filipinos go to Silicon Valley and have set new bars from themselves and see global standards. - Technology and Cultural transfers accelerators to boost the ecosystem 20:30-20:32 Create the framework and infrastructure to really do it. Ecosystem composed of mentors and venture capitalists 21:00-21:18 Have mentors that you can call if youre unsure of what path you are taking, venture capitalist that you can say Hey, help me out you know we have Filipino discounts because they dont know us yet. Filipino capitalist should always only invest in Filipino entrepreneurs. We dont need to export our capital, what we need to invest it inwardly. What the government has done for entreps - PESA highlights how ready Filipinos are for business - Not to blame them but to carry them along: growth in GNP, more tax collection, happier citizenry
