Fluid Mechanics Laboratory: Laboratory 06.2: Gear Pump Test Rig

The document describes an experiment conducted to analyze the characteristics of a gear pump test rig. Key aspects studied include the total head, pump efficiency, and overall efficiency at varying pump speeds. Observations of pressure, flow rate, and time were recorded in tables. Graphs of total head and pump efficiency versus discharge were plotted from the data. Results showed that total head and efficiency increase with higher discharge. The experiment demonstrated that gear pumps convert electrical energy to fluid pressure and flow energy effectively.

Laboratory 06.2: Gear Pump Test rig

Ritu Gavasane Roll no.: 10003020
Aim: To study and determine the characteristics of Gear pumps and to find out: Total head Pump efficiency Overall efficiency Theory : A gear pump uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement. They are one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications. Gear pumps are also widely used in chemical installations to pump fluid with a certain viscosity. There are two main variations; external gear pumps which use two external spur gears, and internal gear pumps which use an external and an internal spur gear. Gear pumps are positive displacement meaning they pump a constant amount of fluid for each revolution. Some gear pumps are designed to function as either a motor or a pump. Setup Component:

Description: The present Gear Pump Test rig is a self-contained unit operated on closed circuit basis containing a sump tank. The set-up consists of a gear pump having a pair of meshed gears, coupled with a DC motor is varied by means of a Thyristor controlled DC drive to vary the RPM of motor. A RPM indicator with proximity sensor indicates the RPM of pump. Flow of fluid is measured by using measuring tank and stop watch. Vacuum gauge is fitted on suction line and pressure gauge is fitted on delivery line to measure the pressure. Data given: Area of measuring tank (A) = 0.0625 m2 Energy meter constant (EMC) = 6400 Pulses/ kW hr Density of oil, r = 868 Kg / m3 Motor efficiency = 0.8 Formulae used: 1. Electrical Power: H.P Elec = Where, tp: time required to have 25 blinks 2. Shaft Power: *H.P Elec Where, Efficiency of motor = 0.8 3. Sources of errors: 1. Human errors may have occurred in measuring the flow rate of the oil while measuring the time required to fill the measuring tank. 2. There may also have been errors while taking the readings of the pressure values from pressure gauges at delivery and suction pipes. Results: 1. The above curves are obtained for given gear pump. They are similar to typical curves generally obtained for gear pumps. Total head vs Discharge Pump efficiency vs Discharge 2. From the plot of total head (H) Vs discharge (Q), it is observed that total head is proportional to the volumetric flow rate.

3.

From the plot of pump efficiency () Vs discharge (Q), it is observed that pump efficiency increases with an increase in the value of volumetric flow rate.

Conclusion: 1. Gear pump converts electrical energy into kinetic and pressure energy of fluid. It works on the principle of pumping a fluid by creating vacuum by meshing of the gears using electrical energy. 2. Discharge increases with increasing RPM of motor of pump. 3. Time taken by energy pulses of energy meter decreases with increasing RPM of pump. Indirectly efficiency increases with increasing RPM. 4. The efficiency reaches a maximum value as we go on increasing the flow rate.
