IB Biology IA Criteria

This document outlines criteria for assessing Internal Assessment (IA) components of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. It describes 3 aspects for evaluating the design of an investigation: defining the problem, controlling variables, and developing a data collection method. Data collection and processing are also assessed based on accurately recording, processing, and presenting quantitative and qualitative raw data. Students are further evaluated on their manipulative skills like following instructions, carrying out techniques competently and safely.

IB IA Criteria

Design Aspect 1 Defining the problem and selecting variables Formulates a focused problem/research question and identifies the relevant variables. Formulates a problem/research question that is incomplete or identifies only some relevant variables. Does not identify a problem/research question and does not identify any relevant variables. Aspect 2 Controlling variables Designs a method for the effective control of the variables. Designs a method that makes some attempt to control the variables. Aspect 3 Developing a method for collection of data Develops a method that allows for the collection of sufficient relevant data. Develops a method that allows for the collection of insufficient relevant data. Conclusion and evaluation Aspect 1 Concluding States a conclusion, with justification, based on a reasonable interpretation of the data. States a conclusion based on a reasonable interpretation of the data. Aspect 2 Evaluating procedure(s) Evaluates weaknesses and limitations. Aspect 3 Improving the investigation Suggests realistic improvements in respect of identified weaknesses and limitations. Suggests only superficial improvements.

Identifies some weaknesses and limitations, but the evaluation is weak or missing. States no conclusion or Identifies irrelevant the conclusion is based weaknesses and on an unreasonable limitations. interpretation of the data.

Suggests unrealistic improvements.

Data collection and processing Aspect 1 Recording raw data Records appropriate quantitative and associated qualitative raw data, including units and uncertainties where relevant. Records appropriate quantitative and associated qualitative raw data, but with some mistakes or omissions. Does not record any appropriate quantitative raw data or raw data is incomprehensible. Aspect 2 Processing raw data Processes the quantitative raw data correctly. Aspect 3 Presenting processed data Presents processed data appropriately and, where relevant, includes errors and uncertainties.

Manipulative skills (assessed summatively) This criterion addresses objective 5. Aspect 1 Levels/marks Complete/2 Following instructions* Follows instructions accurately, adapting to new circumstances (seeking assistance when required). Follows instructions but requires assistance.
