My Personal Learning Style

Different people have different learning styles. Some people learn by seeing, some people learn by hearing while other maybe learn better by experiencing and doing things. There are three basic types of learning styles that are visual learning, auditory learning and kinaesthetic learning. I consider myself as a visual learner. I learn through seeing or observing things. Since I was in school, I couldnt retain what I hear for too long. I would easily forget everything the teacher says. For me, information may not resist if it is not written down. Paper and pen are my good friends. I often prefer to take detailed notes to absorb information. Nowadays I make references from books in the library and surf the internet for extra notes after class. All the notes will keep in files for revision. The facts will last very long in my memory as I have read and memorize them. Therefore, I can perform better in the examination. I create graphic organizers such as diagrams, concept maps and mind mapping to represent ideas and information. In my opinion, they are more attractive than just words. Concept map or mind map were used to illustrate my notes especially in learning biology and chemistry when I was in secondary school. They show the relationships between ideas, sequences and conclusions clearly. I have a great sense of direction. Drawing out the directions is my habit before going somewhere. My hobby is traveling. I always keep a map to guide

me when free lance traveling. I can easily find my way around using maps and I rarely get lost. I tend to think in pictures and need to create vivid mental images to retain information. Visual materials such as videos, power point presentations, graphs and maps can easily grab my attentions and help me to recall information more completely later. Normally, before reading a chapter in text book, I need to have a big picture in my mind for better understanding. That is why I go through titles, charts, graphs and pictures to get a overall idea of the content. I scribble while listening to lectures. I tire and get bored if just listening to a passive presentation. I require to pay attention to the body language or facial expression of others. Active exercises like brain storming able to help me focus on. I like bright colours. My house is decorated with my choice of colours. Bright coloured attire are my favourite. I dont mind to spend lavishly for my clothes. In learning, various coloured highlighters and pens are used to underline or circle the important points in my reference book and note books. This is the way foe me to remember and recall information. Finally, I have my own theory. I learn by repeated an idea over and over, then it last longer in my memory. When I do my revision, the key words or mathematical formulas will be written down on a piece of paper for several times. Such information will maintain for a long time. It is more difficult for me to memorize something when I recite it frequently.

Even though I am a visual leaner, I still have other characteristics as an auditory leaner and kinaesthetic learner. I enjoy playing outdoor games such as badminton and basket ball. Sometimes, I like to working with tools and enjoy doing Do-It-Youself activities with my family. Mental arithmetic is one of my favourite subjects in school even though it needs a lot of hearing skills and pratical works.
