Chinese Invention Essay Rubric

This document provides a rubric for evaluating writing with 4 levels of achievement: 1) Consistent Control is complete mastery of content, style, sentence formation, usage, and mechanics. 2) Reasonable Control has a clear central idea but may have minor errors or inconsistencies. 3) Inconsistent Control has an unclear or shifting focus with patterns of errors in several areas. 4) Little/No Control has no clear idea, little organization, and major errors across many areas of writing. The rubric then provides detailed criteria for assessing content, style, sentence formation, usage, and mechanics at each level of writing quality.

The essay contains all factual information and thoroughly explores one main topic, (Medieval Chinese Invention) (5pts.) The essay contains FIVE paragraphs: a strong Introduction, Body (3 paragraphs), and full Conclusion, is organized into paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details, and the evidence in a logical order (5pts.) Essay includes a correctly formatted bibliography with no errors and references THREE or more reputable sources, one being a book (hard copy/physical) (5pts.) Essay includes the significance/ impact of the invention to the Chinese at that time (how did improve their life) and connects the invention to our world today in a relevant and meaningful way. (5pts.)

The essay contains all factual information, explores only one main topic, (Medieval Chinese Invention) (4) The essay contains at least FOUR paragraphs: Introduction, a Body (3 paragraphs), and may have a Conclusion. Essay is organized into paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details. (4) Essay includes a bibliography in correct format (may contains minor errors in formatting) and at least THREE sources cited.
