A Proposal To Review How Client Server Network Can Reduce The Company's Expenses by Juan Perez

This proposal suggests implementing a client-server network using the X11 server model to reduce company expenses. The X11 model stores files on a central server and uses thin client machines to access the server, eliminating the need for fully built computers at each workstation. This would cut computer costs to about half per user. It would also lower electricity bills and increase stability by separating the GUI from the operating system. The proposal outlines installing the new network over a weekend to minimize disruptions and transferring files from existing computers to the new server.

Powell A Proposal to Review How Client Server Network Can Reduce the Companys Expenses by Juan Perez

Summary Billions of dollars are spent yearly by companies buying computers and related accessories. This proposal will investigate how the implementation of client server networks will lower company expenses to a fraction of what it currently is. I will walk you through what a client server is, more specifically the X11 server model, and its cost. I will bring up the benefits of having such network and what companies are suitable for it. Given that we have a traditional client-server network. Introduction Throughout the world, an immense amount of money is spent towards making every single computer better for employees of a company. Improving computers in work zone is not a bad thing; dont get me wrong, there are just different ways of improving the working experience while staying on budget. With this technology the company will not have to worry about buying a bigger hard drive or bigger ram to every computer, simply spend the money on one, the server. Most people immediately think of internet when they hear server, although this is true, a lot of client server networks can also be local. Project Description I propose to implement the X11 server model into our company for the feasibility of our workers and the companys expenses. In this review, I will achieve the following three goals: 1. Explain how we can achieve this drastic change from basic client-server network to X11 server network; 2. Explain how the system works Most people know the definition of a client server network, which in short is, a bunch of files stored on a server and can be accessed through a client. The X Window System (commonly known as the X11 model) works very similarly to this except there is no need for other fully built computers to act as a client. How this works is by having a server, more or less like a big computer tower, and then pretty much a screen with simple architecture including basic components such as a graphic cards and ram. The screens will provide GUIs (Graphical User Interface) which are all the buttons, icons and

windows ("The X Window System: A Brief Introduction"), that will simply ask the server for information to be displayed only in that screen. I believe the current companys network is a bit too complex for every worker to understand, whether it is the user or the ones setting it up. If we had 200 workers per se, that is 200 fully built computers at around $600 each; that is about $120,000 on average without including software and/or upgrades. The University of Central Florida uses this type of expensive network which is your typical client-server network. The biggest feature of the X11 model is that it is separate from the operating systems therefore eliminating the overhead (i.e., memory space and processor activity) of a GUI and instead applying all the hardware resources to faster responses to service requests ("The X Window System: A Brief Introduction"). We are looking here at a one-time expense into more or less a super computer with multiple interface styles for every type of user. Each user will have their own part of the main frame computer and can be accessed with username and password credentials much like a website. As mentioned before, since the X11user computers do not require all the major components of a typical work-styled computer therefore cutting the price of each user computer to about half the normal price. With this in mind we can invest the extra money we will not spend into other features in which the company lacks of and if that is not the case, some of the extra money could go into raises for the workers of the company. Another great advantage to keep in mind is that with less fully built CPUs the electricity bill will exponentially decrease. Most people will believe then, that if this super computer crashes or freezes every user will be affected. This is another great advantage of this type of system, it high degree of stability. If the server crashes for some odd reason, the computer as a whole will not crash and can be fixed without a reboot, for the most part, this could waste a lot of time. This system is most suitable for companies, such as ours, that relies heavily on computers and internet.

Figure 1-1. Simple visual on how the X11 works, where the client runs on the local machine and asks for services from the server (Janssen).

Plan of Action This section presents my plan for obtaining the objectives discussed in the previous section. Since changing a whole companys network system can be tedious and rather bothersome for the employees. To complete this setup without disrupting employees and their projects, it should be done while no one is at work for example winter break or even a weekend. The first step to accomplish this, is to obtain the files from the current computers and transfer them into the new mother computer, this procedure can be done while the employees are at work since this is not a difficult task. The next step will have to be done, as I mentioned, during a period of time where the offices are not occupied. The current computers and servers must be removed to make room for the new equipment. The now old equipment could either be sold as wholesale or be given to charity. The next day we will begin the installation process; this process should not take more than a day to complete since old lines that the old network used are compatible with the X11 system so it is much more like a plug-and-play. Testing is also a key component when setting this up, therefore the last day will be dedicated to testing every aspect of this new network to make sure it is running properly. We are looking at about 3 days of work at most, so it is not a lengthy procedure that can most likely be done over the course of a weekend. Although this new system will bring a more user friendly interface, I would like to bring some fellow employees to our partner company to try out the new network interface and decided if they feel as if it will bring feasibility to workplace. Management Plan I have done my research about the X11 model and I feel that it will bring nothing but positive effects to our company. In this section present my schedule, costs, and qualifications for performing the proposed change. I plan of completing this project, from finding the proper team to finishing the project, by no later than this upcoming summer. To reach this goal, I will find the best and most economical company to satisfy our needs. Some companies allow old equipment as a form of payment, luckily the company we find will accept this in order for our company to obtain a discounted price. Qualifications I am a sophomore in the Computer Information Technology at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. I have taken network setup classes that will allow me to be part of this project. Along with the classes I have set up various networks ranging from home networks to small business networks. My hands on experience as well as the courses I have master will help me success with this proposed change. I will answer any other questions or further information at your request.
