Texture

This document discusses texture in art and provides activities to identify and create textures. It defines texture as the surface quality of materials, which can be either actual/tactile or implied/visual. Activity 1 involves identifying textures. Activity 2 has students create tactile texture samples by gluing various materials like cotton, sand, leaves onto paper. Activity 3 has students create visual textures on paper squares using art techniques like rubbing, finger painting, stamping to imply textures without actual 3D elements.

TEXTURE

Definition: The surface

quality of materials, either
actual (tactile) or implied
(visual). The term is often
misused to refer only to
rough surfaces but this is
not correct. All surfaces
have texture.

ACTIVITY 1
Identifying Textures: Answer the exercise given in the photocopy

TACTILE TEXTURE is the actual 3D feel of a texture. Tactile means

touch. Painters like Van Gogh can use sand in their pant to get a texture
on their painting.

VISUAL TEXTURE refers to the illusion of the surface's texture. It is

what tactile texture looks like (on a 2D surface). The textures you see
in a photograph are visual textures. No matter how rough objects in the
photograph look, the surface of the photograph is smooth and flat.
