Proposal for establishment of an International Research Training Group (IRTG) in all fields of Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences for the year 2011.

Sir/Madam, An MoU has been signed between UGC and DFG to enhance well structured and long term partnership Under the MoU, the Commission invites proposals for funding research groups forming an International Research Training Group (IRTG) in India and in Germany, aimed at the training of doctoral students in both countries, in areas of mutual interest, covering all fields of Sciences, humanities and social sciences, with specific emphasis on interdisciplinary within the main topic of the research area. This offer will be applicable to those faculty employed at Universities/Higher Education Institutions recognized under Section 2(f) and 12B of UGC Act. The details of the exchange programme may be seen at Annexure-I. The Commission would be grateful if the above information is brought to the notice of the teachers in the University and its affiliated colleges. The application may be submitted in the prescribed proforma (Annexure-II) strictly with the following documents:1. 2. 3. 4. UGC-DFG PROGRAMME ON EXCHANGE OF PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS AND CO-INVESTIGATORS IN THE FILED OF SCIENCES, SOCIAL SCIENCES, HUMANITIES FOR THE YEAR 2011. Criteria 1. 2. 3. The research groups on both sides should possess a high international reputation; The proposed research programme in which the groups wish to cooperate should be of the highest quality; The participation of both groups should be of such significance in terms of both content and size that the joint programme can be expected to develop into a IndoGerman center of competence of the highest academic quality.

Participants and Eligibility The number of Principal Investigators and Co-investigators, participating doctoral students and Post-doctoral of a Indo-German IRTG shall be in accordance with the current DFG guidelines for the establishment of International Research Training Groups (as per DFGform 1.301e-7/10). The participation of Indian and German researchers in an IRTG should be balanced and ensure that sufficient research expertise is provided to cover all aspects of the research and qualification programme. On the German side, an IRTG is applied for by the German host University. On the Indian side, the offer will be applicable to researchers permanently employed at academic institutions / organizations, recognized by the UGC under sections 2(f) and 12B. On the German side the applications from faculty, who have established contacts with faculty from partner institutions in each others countries, would be the pre-requisite. The Principal Investigators from both sides should thoroughly discuss the details of the project in advance, before finalizing and submitting the project proposals to the UGC and the DFG for establishment of International Research Training Group (IRTG). Proposal submission and Evaluation Only joint proposals from applicants based in India and Germany are eligible.

Funding Grants will be offered towards project specific costs, consumables, personnel, travel and living costs. The number of exchange visits from both side, duration of each visit and the total duration of the project will be in accordance with the category of the funding instrument for which the application is submitted. No funding will be available for already existing collaborative projects where travel and living costs are financed by other sources.

The UGC and the DFG will providing means for all activities, as listed below, related to the project, given the availability of funds: doctoral students post-doctoral visiting researchers workshops summer school conferences specific additional research costs travel cost for doctoral students, Post-doctoral, and Principal Investigators additional administrative costs (e.g. coordination, recruitment)

The sending side will bear the travel costs (incl, overseas medical insurance, visa fees, etc) between the home institutions and the respective host institutions in Indian and Germany, while the receiving side will provide local hospitality according to the respective. Duration An IRTG may be funded initially for a period of four and a half (4.5) years. In well deserved cases extension may be granted for a second term of four and a half (4.5) years after the successful evaluation of a joint renewal proposal. Application procedure Once the pre-proposal is approved, the joint proposals are to be submitted simultaneously by the Principal Investigators to the respective funding institution (UGC in India and DFG in Germany). The final decision will be made jointly by UGC and DFG given the availability of funds on both sides. Support for the individual parts of the joint bilateral research project must be in accordance with the national regulations and the guidelines of the respective funding institutions.
