MSE 601A Statistical Analysis Formula 1

Formula 1, also known as F1, is the highest class of single seater auto racing governed by the FIA. A Formula 1 season consists of a series of Grand Prix races held on circuits around the world. The results are combined to determine the drivers' and constructors' championships. The null hypothesis is that there are no variables influencing a driver's chance of winning a race, while the alternate hypothesis is that various factors do influence race results. Data analysis of racing legend Ayrton Senna's career found variables like points, grid positions, and poles had a clear relationship to race outcomes, leading to a rejection of the null hypothesis. Teams emphasize these influencing variables to achieve the best results from their drivers and win

Formula 1 Facts
Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1 and referred to officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of single seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fdration Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)
The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (in English, Grand Prizes), held on purpose-built circuits and public roads The results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors Formula One cars race at speeds of up to 360 km/h (220 mph) with engines limited in performance to a maximum of 18,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) A Formula One Grand Prix event spans a weekend A qualifying session is held after the last free practice session. This session determines the starting order for the race on Sunday The race begins with a warm-up lap, after which the cars assemble on the starting grid in the order they qualified.

Hypothesis
NULL HYPOTHESIS: There are no variables that influence the winning of a particular driver in a race ALTERNATE HYPOTHESIS: There are various factors that influence the winning of a particular driver in a race

Trial and error

Collection of previous 10 year data points based on the grid positions for each team Learning Process began where we failed to achieve a strong model

Weak data which lacked Logical Reasoning

Weak Model

Collection of more data points

Better than before

Creation of a Stronger Model

Statistical data of a particular driver was picked Eliminated the error of a logical reasoning and increased the reliability of the data to generate relationship with the variables Statistical data of racing legend Ayrton Senna was collected Variables influencing to win a race include: o Points Points won each season o Points Rank Driver rankings at the end of the season o Average Finish Average of the races completed per season o Average Grid Average of grid positions per season o Start Number of starts in each season o Poles Starting the race from grid position 1

Regression Data Analysis

Result of the Analysis

We fail to accept the Null Hypothesis since there is a clear relationship between the outcome of the race to the factors influencing the race results
High Coefficient of determination(R) amounts to the variability in our data explained by the regression model

Predictive Decisions and business aspects by Teams

Each team in the FIA emphasizes on the variables used in the analysis to get the best results from their drivers in order to win the Constructors Championship trophy Money Talks: Entering a new team in the Formula One World Championship requires a 25 million (about US$47 million) up-front payment to the FIA Each point earned in a race by teams is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars To finish a race with points is the utmost goal for all emerging teams
