Fluid Mechanics Exam Solutions

This document contains 3 exam problems related to fluid mechanics: 1. A triangular gate holds back water and the question asks to calculate the vertical force needed to keep it closed given the geometry and water depth. 2. Two fluids flow between infinite plates where the middle plate can move and the question asks about the direction of shear stresses and developing an expression for the velocity of one plate. 3. Steady flow past a vertically oriented cylinder and the question involves relating pressure on the cylinder surface to the angle around the cylinder using inviscid flow theory.

Name:________________________ ME 332, Spring 2009 Exam 1 Problem 1 (40 points): Consider a body of water held back by a triangular gate,

as shown below. The gate is an equilateral triangle with sides of length 6 feet. A hinge is located along its bottom edge, allowing it to swing open. In the closed position, the gate makes an angle of 50 degrees to the horizontal. For a water depth of 3 feet, what vertical force will be needed at the top of the gate in order to hold it closed? Assume that the mass of the gate is negligible. Geometric properties for some potentially helpful areas have been provided for you.

Problem 2 (30 Points): Two types of fluid, with viscosities AB and BC , flow between 3 effectively infinite plates, A, B and C, as shown in the figure below. B is free to move to the left or to the right; the only forces acting on it in these directions are due to viscous shear from the fluids above and below. If B is stationary: i) ii) iii) Show the direction of the shear stresses acting on each side of B. (Use an arrow: or , to do so). In which direction must plate A be dragged? Develop an expression for the magnitude of V A .

A and C are dragged with constant velocities, V A and VC . Since the flow between A and B is created by dragging A, its velocity profile varies linearly with y. The flow between B and C, however, is complicated by additional factors, and its velocity profile is given by the relationship: 2 u y y = 3 2 VC BC BC Note that for small y (i.e. near the top surface of B), u is negative (flow is in the opposite direction of VC .)

Problem 3 (30 Points): Consider a steady, incompressible flow of air past a vertically-oriented cylinder, as shown below. Some representative streamlines near the surface are drawn. In the free-stream (i.e. far from the cylinder), the fluid flows with velocity U and static pressure p o . At the surface of the cylinder, inviscid flow theory predicts the velocity magnitude, VS , as VS = 2U sin . Obtain an equation for the pressure on the surface of the cylinder, pS ( ) . For what values of 0 will p S be greater than p o ? For what values will it be 2 less than p o ? Indicate these regions on the drawing provided. Note that VS is the streamwise velocity magnitude along a streamline at the surface of the cylinder.
