Description of Map Window Main Elements: The MAP WINDOW is where the map is displayed. The contents of the display are controlled by the various tool buttons, layer controls, and queries.

The SCALE BAR is located at the bottom left corner of the display and can be adjusted manually.

The MAP OVERVIEW WINDOW is a small window that can be activated by clicking on the white arrow located in the upper right corner of the screen. This displays an overview of the Map Window. The red box indicates the extent of the map displayed in the main map window.

The TOOLBAR at the top of the map window and the various tools displayed there are used to control the map display. Users can ZOOM IN or ZOOM OUT, PAN the main map window, QUERY the features in the map window, MEASURE DISTANCES, etc.

Clicking on any tool button will activate that tool for use. It is important to remember that the tool that is active (indicated by a gray box around the button) remains active until a different button is clicked. The active tool is also indicated at the lower left corner of the browser window.

Different tool sets can be turned on by clicking the corresponding set in the tool box pull down menu. Below are descriptions for each of the tools in the Toolbar. For quick reference while in the Main Map Window hold the mouse pointer over any of the Toolbar icons for a brief description of the tool.

MAP LAYER CONTROLS The map layer controls are located in the Table of Contents, shown to the right. There are three primary functions of the Map Layer Controls: 1. To select which map layer(s) to display, check or uncheck the "Visible" column, this will display the selected layer(s) in the Map Window. 2. Select which layer to make "Active." In order to query, or ask for information, about the features of a particular map layer, that layer must be turned on as the "Active" layer. While multiple layers can be selected for display, only one layer can be "active." 3. Some layers may be expandable showing various sub-layers that may also be turned on and made active. Simply click on the layer you want to expand. Note that several of the layers are "scale-dependent." This means that these layers contain too much detail to display on a countywide map. When the map is zoomed out too far, these items will be greyed out in the legend. They will become available when the map is zoomed in to a scale where viewing these layers is feasible (approximately the size of a typical town). This is true of Streets and Highways, Parcels, and other data layers. The QUICK ZOOM drop-down menu, shown to the left, is found just below the scale bar in the lower left corner of the map window. Use this menu to zoom to a specific city, town, or village. The selected municipality will be drawn in the Map Window.

CHANGE MAP PROJECTION Use this drop down menu to change the maps projected coordinate system. The selected projection will be drawn in the Map Window.

The results of your search will be displayed in a new window (example below). In some cases, additional information about your search results may be available. HOW TO CONSTRUCT A QUERY A query enables the user to ask for specific information about a particular map layer using a set of variables. The following example shows how to construct a query. These procedures are the same for constructing a query for any of the map layers. It is important to realize that you can only obtain information from the map layer if its associated database contains that information. (E.g. if the database for the parks layer does not contain information on the number of baseball diamonds each park has, then one could not ask to show the parks that have baseball diamonds.) In this example, we will ask the database to find a park with a specific name. 1. On the table of contents, make the parks layer active by clicking on the radio button

2. Click the Query tool on the toolbar 3. In the Query Builder window, use the drop-down menus to select Ontario St Boat Launch and click Execute.

4. If you wish to narrow your results further, you may add another string by clicking the add button in the Query Builder window and clicking Execute. 5. The Query results will appear in a new window and can be used in the same manner as shown on page 7.

PRINTING A MAP 1. Click on the Printer icon on the toolbar.

2. Select the desired map template in the Print Template window.

3. You may then select an output format (PDF or image file type), resolution, map scale, and legend options. Here you can also enter a custom title for your map and include notes that will be displayed on your printed map.

Page 9

4. You can then choose to view your map or send it to someone by email. If you select view, a dialog will open and prompt you to download the map. If you select email, a dialog will open and you will be able to enter the recipients email address. The email recipient will receive an email from gis@erie.gov with the map included as an attachment.
