The Intel 4004 Microprocessor

The document discusses the history and development of microprocessors. It notes that in 1971, Intel introduced the world's first single-chip microprocessor, the Intel 4004, which had over 2,300 transistors on a chip just 3mm by 4mm in size. Later, Intel introduced the first 8-bit microprocessor, the 8008 in 1972 and the 8080 in 1974 which had 10 times the power. The 8080 was used in one of the first home computers, the Altair 8800. Though developed by Intel, the 1993 Pentium chip was based on research conducted by Indian engineer Vinod Dham.

Microprocessor basics

In November, 1971, a company called Intel publicly introduced the world's first single chip microprocessor, the Intel 4004 (U.S. Patent #3,821,715), invented by Intel engineers Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff, and Stanley Mazor. In 1969, Intel released the world's first metal oxide semi-conductor (MOS) static ram, the 1101. Also in 1969, Intel's first money making product was the 3101 Schottky bipolar 64-bit static random access memory (SRAM) chip. A year later in 1970, Intel introduced the 1103, DRAM memory chip In 1969, Intel released the world's first metal oxide semi-conductor (MOS) static ram, the 1101. Also in 1969, Intel's first money making product was the 3101 Schottky bipolar 64-bit static random access memory (SRAM) chip. A year later in 1970, Intel introduced the 1103, DRAM memory chip. In 1971, Intel introduced the now-famous world's first single chip microprocessor (computer on a chip), the Intel 4004, invented by Intel engineers Federico Faggin, Ted Hoff, and Stanley Mazor. In 1972, Intel introduced the first 8-bit microprocessor the 8008. In 1974, the Intel 8080 microprocessor was introduced with ten times the power of the 8008. In 1975, the 8080 microprocessor was used in one of the first consumer home computer - the Altair 8800 that was sold in kit form. In 1976, Intel introduced the first micro-controllers, the 8748 and 8048, a computeron-a-chip optimized to control electronic devices. Though produced by the USAs Intel Corporation, the 1993 Pentium was basically the outcome of a research conducted by an Indian engineer. Popularly known as the Father of the Pentium chip, the inventor of the computer chip is Vinod Dham.

Intel 4004 Microprocessor

The 4004 was the world's first universal microprocessor. In the late 1960s, many scientists had discussed the possibility of a computer on a chip, but nearly everyone felt that integrated circuit technology was not yet ready to support such a chip. Intel's Ted Hoff felt differently; he was the first person to recognize that the new silicon-gated MOS technology might make a single-chip CPU (central processing unit) possible. Hoff and the Intel team developed such an architecture with just over 2,300 transistors in an area of only 3 by 4 millimetres. With its 4-bit CPU, command register, decoder, decoding control, control monitoring of machine commands and interim register, the 4004 was one heck of a little invention. Today's 64-bit microprocessors are still based on similar designs, and the microprocessor is still the most complex mass-produced product ever with more than 5.5 million transistors performing hundreds of millions of calculations each second - numbers that are sure to be outdated fast

1. The microprocessor chip is an electronic device that is a computer's central processing unit (cpu) aka the brains of your computer. A microprocessor is a single integrated circuit that is a multipurpose, programmable, clock-driven, register based electronic device that accepts binary data as input, processes it according to instructions stored in its memory, and provides results as output.
