8x57mm Mauser

The 8x57mm Mauser cartridge was introduced in 1888 for the German Model 1888 Commission Rifle, becoming a widely used military and hunting round across Europe. While not developed by Mauser, the cartridge came to be known as the 8x57mm Mauser. It remains a popular hunting caliber, with two bore diameters available and capable of taking a variety of large and small game out to 400 yards.

Its name is misleading because it was neither developed nor produced by the Oberndorf factory.

Being designed from scratch by Kaiserliche Gewehrkommission (Imperial Rifle Commission) at Spandau/Germany as Patrone M/88 this round was introduced in the Model 1888 Commission Rifle. The 8x57 (or 7,9x57) soon became the epochmaking service and hunting cartridge of continental Europe and spread all over the world.

The 8x57 comes in two different bore diameters. Barrels marked 8x57 I or J are restricted to .318-inch bullets; barrels marked 8x57 IS or JS or 8mm S or simply S are suited for .323-inch bullets. The 8x57 IS is best suited for red stag and wild boar and almost anything that roams the plains and woods. My love affair with the 8x57 IS began in 1960, when I bagged my first buck roe deer with one of my fathers rifles, a hunterized and Hensoldt 6x36 scope equipped Karabiner Model 98. Many hundred head of wild boar, roe and red deer followed. A quarry of several dozen head of hoofed game animals taken in one season is quite normal for a German P.H., as we hunt mostly for conservation/culling. The 0.349 forever young 8x57 IS in my eyes is still 20 48' on top, and 8mm 200-grain X-Bullets are my favorite all-rounders.
