9.0 Motor Drives Using Mosfets: 9.1 Buck Chopper Drive

This document provides instructions for an experiment using a buck chopper drive to control the speed of a DC motor. A MOSFET is used as a switch in the chopper circuit to apply a chopped voltage from the source to the motor, allowing control of the average voltage and thereby the motor speed. The duty cycle, modulation period, and modulation frequency are defined and their effects on the output voltage and motor speed are explored. The chopper drive is able to accelerate and decelerate the motor but not change its direction of rotation, making it a single-quadrant converter. A four-quadrant converter capable of bidirectional speed control is introduced for the next experiment.
