Thanksgiving explosion rocks Browervilles Land O Lakes plant

On Thanksgiving afternoon an explosion in the dryer area of the Land O Lakes plant in Browerville sent a plume of dark smoke and flames high above the plant that was reportedly seen by residents up to several miles away. The explosion, the cause of which has yet to be determined, heavily damaged the internal structure of the building along with several pieces of equipment located on the roof of the facility. None of the three employees that were working that afternoon were injured in the explosion and resulting fire, although one Browerville Fire Department member was treated and released at a local hospital for minor flash burns. Reportedly, 21 people are employed at the Milk Replacer Plant, and the future of their jobs remains uncertain as of Monday morning. On Tuesday, December 3rd, a team of specialists from Texas will be visiting the facility to try to determine the cause of the explosion and assess the extent of the damages. No official statement has been made by Land O Lakes at this time. The following is an official release from the Todd County Sheriffs Department that assisted at the scene along with firefighters from Browerville and surrounding communities.: On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, at approx. 4:35 pm, the Todd County Sheriffs Office received a call of an explosion at Land O Lakes in Browerville. A piece of equipment exploded causing a fire that eventually spread to equipment on the roof of the building. The Browerville Fire Dept. was assisted at the scene by Staples, Clarissa, and Long Prairie Fire Departments. A member of the Browerville Fire Dept. received minor burns and was transported to CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie by private vehicle. Fire personnel were on the scene until approx. 11:30 pm. Browerville ambulance was also dispatched to the scene and remained there until the fire was extinguished. Watch future editions of the Blade for updates on the future of the Browerville Land O Lakes plant.

Give yourself the gift of safety this holiday season

FOLLOW THESE TIPS, HELP KEEP MINNESOTA ON TRACK FOR HISTORIC FIRE SAFETY YEAR Minnesota is on pace to experience one of its lowest numbers of annual fire fatalities. While zero is the only acceptable number, State Fire Marshal Jerry Rosendahl wants the trend to continue and urges all Minnesotans to take extra caution during the holiday season a historically dangerous time for residential fires. Holiday distractions can cause people to forget about fire safety and that can be a fatal mistake, Rosendahl said. Make sure your holiday season stays enjoyable. Review the simple kitchen and heating rules that can keep you and your family safe. There have been 30 fire-related deaths to date in 2013, compared with 44 this time last year. The states all-time low fire-death figure was 35 in 2009; the high was 134 in 1976. 2012 holiday fire death statistics THANKSGIVING WEEKEND 12:01 a.m. Thursday through midnight Sunday Fire deaths: 3 (50 percent of Novembers total fire deaths) Fire injuries: 1 CHRISTMAS SEASON 12:01 a.m. Christmas Eve through midnight Jan. 1 Fire deaths: 3 (50 percent of Decembers total fire deaths) Fire injures 4 According to State Fire Marshal Division records, people leaving food unattended on the stove is the main culprit in home fires.

ROBERT J. WOLTER, 87 LONG PRAIRIE MARCH 13, 1926 NOV. 25, 2013 Memorial services were held Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Long Prairie for Robert J. Wolter, 87, Long Prairie. Pastor Noah Wehrspann officiated and burial was at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Long Prairie. Robert J. Wolter was born March 13, 1926 in Long Prairie, the son of Joseph and Florence (Bartella) Wolter. He attended school in Browerville, where he graduated from high school. Robert entered the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was stationed in 50 years ago - Dec. 5, 1963 In one of the largest votes cast here in recent years, Joseph Gladke was re-elected Mayor of Browerville, and George Buhl was elected to a three year term on the City Council. Stove fires are particularly dangerous because they dont behave like other fires. Most of them are grease-fueled, and people who panic and use water or a fire extinguisher on a stove fire will only spread the flames. Stove fires should be smothered. Put a lid on the pan or close the oven; fire cant live without air. Other tips that can save your holiday from ruin Keep a close eye on food cooking on the stovetop. Keep a tight lid next to each pot or pan. Keep rags, pot holders, paper towel and curtains away from the stove. Roll up your sleeves and keep your apron snug. Clean cooking surfaces, oven and equipment often; grease and heat are a deadly combination. Keep children out of the kitchen, away from the stove. Make sure your smoke alarms are working.

Holiday cooking can be timeconsuming, complicated and messy, Rosendahl said. But I assure you that following a halfdozen simple rules can keep us all safe and put an end to these preventable fire deaths. About the State Fire Marshal Division The mission of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division is to protect lives and property by fostering a fire-safe environment through fire/arson investigation, code development and enforcement, regulation, data collection and public education. Data collected by the State Fire Marshal Division from fire departments statewide is analyzed and used to determine the best methods of public education and enforcement to improve fire safety in our state. State Fire Marshal Division 2012 annual statistics: One fire was reported every 32 minutes. Fifty people died in fires. Dollar-loss to fires averaged $556 per minute.

Peggys Potpourri
It is a known fact that chocolate has caffeine in it. But did you know that you would have to eat more then a dozen chocolate bars to get the same amount of caffeine from a cup of coffee? Chocolate is actually a valuable energy source. A single chocolate chip can provide enough energy for an adult human to walk 150 ft. Approximately 7 billion chocolate chips are eaten each year. Chocolate has great health benefits. It helps with depression, high blood pressure, tumors and premenstrual syndromes. Chocolate is able to act as an anti-depressant by increasing serotonin and endorphin levels in the brain. Chocolate does not cause or aggravate acne, this is a myth. Dark chocolate bars, which are high in cocoa actually deject tooth decay and and can even whiten your teeth! One ounce of baking chocolate or cocoa contains 10% of the daily recommended intake of iron. People spend more than $7 billion dollars a year on chocolate. The per capita consumption of chocolate indicates that each person consumes 12 pounds of chocolate each year. But it is the Swiss that consume the most at 22 pounds of chocolate per year. In Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Psycho" chocolate syrup was used to indicate blood in the famous shower scene. There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate. .........Linda Grayson

The Christmas gift

We have all spent hours pondering what to get people for Christmas. Thats why its nice to have a person actually tell you what they want. It avoids that awkward exchange when the best you could do was get them a reindeer sweater, and they hate sweaters as well as reindeer. My wifes sister called one day last week. During the conversation she mentioned she would like to have some hickory nuts as a Christmas present. Theyre not readily available where she lives in New York. On our place, we have somewhere between ten thousand and eight million hickory trees. I havent been able to get an exact count. We could get her some hickory nuts. Ten or fifteen years ago, a friend gave us a handful of hickory nuts that were more than twice the size of any we had. We thought this was pretty unique and it would be great to have trees that produced giant nuts, if we every found a use for hickBy Walter Scott ory nuts. Up to this point, the best use weve found for hickory trees is firewood. Until this day, we really hadnt bothered to gather the nuts. The next question was, where did we plant our special trees? Neither of us could remember. We called our sons. They both could remember the giant hickory nuts, as they were rather remarkable in size. Neither of them had a clue what we did with them. My wife had an idea they may have been planted over by the new pond. Even if it wasnt the giant nuts, there are another twenty acres or so of nothing but hickory trees over there. It would be a good place to start. Damon and Zane were cutting firewood where we were going on our expedition. I stopped to help with the firewood and Zane, who was ready for a break, went to help Nanna gather nuts. By the time we finished the load, the gatherers were back. Not only could they not find the giants they were seeking, they didnt have enough nuts to cover the bottom of the bucket. They thought the turkeys or deer may have gotten to them first. I thought it was impossible for that many hickory nuts to be gone so soon. We went back to a spot in the timber that was covered with nuts a couple weeks ago when I was out there hunting. It was difficult to stand up because of all the nuts. The leaves had been raked into piles by the wildlife and almost every hickory nut was gone. We may not have found the giant nuts, nor been able to pick them up by the shovelful, but I knew where some nuts were that the wildlife had not as yet gotten. Between our house and the storage shed, there is a group of thirty or forty hickory trees. It seems on a dry year, hardwood trees produce nuts, seeds, or acorns by the thousands, to make sure their species survives. Weve had a dry year and walking up hill among the trees is a lot like walking on marbles. We are blessed with an abundance of nuts. Probably because of the dogs, the wildlife hasnt bothered them. Each time I walked up the hill and almost fell down, I wondered what we could do to get rid of all these hickory nuts. The perfect solution has been found. We can load them all up and ship them to somebody that actually wants them. Mary, a truck will be arriving the second week of December. I told them to just dump the load in the driveway. Its a Christmas present.

Letter from the Country

Many area fire fighters, along with employees of Land O Lakes, Browerville, may not have felt that they had much to be thankful for as they battled the blaze that threatened the building and they wondered about their future. But, they do. They can all be thankful that no one was seriously injured, or even killed in the explosion that still remains under investigation. Many, many fire fighters, deputies, and emergency personnel spent the majority of their holiday afternoon and evening on the scene, thank you to all of them for their efforts. Our Thanksgiving was real enjoyable. Kimberly, Nicholas, and myself had all celebrated the holiday the week before with my parents and Jordan in Minneapolis, so we had a free day to do whatever we wanted. Even though a couple of things broke and I ended up having to do more than I wanted that day, it was nice to be able to spend the entire day outside finishing up several minor projects. That evening I cooked grilled swordfish and shrimp pasta for Kimberly and me and we finished off the day with a nice glass of wine and a few games of cribbage. She whupped me by the way..... I am hearing stories of people having success ice fishing, but Im still trying to get a deer. Having no luck during the regular season, Ive been heading out, muzzle loader in hand, to see if I cant manage to get one. So far, Aaron - 0, Deer - 4. Its not looking good, and with the temperatures plummeting near the end of the week, I believe my chances are getting even less. Oh, well, I might have to go out and catch fish instead. Im going to cut this real short again so we can finish up this paper and I can get home to check the wood stove. Ill write again later. Plan to attend the upcoming Christmas Concerts on December 6th, 11th, and 12th and send us your letters to Santa by December 12th. Again, we will forward them to the North Pole. Aaron

Neighbors, the HSUS challenge massive Minnesota sow facilitys water permit
STATE AGENCY IGNORED ITS OWN EXPERTS CONCERNS ABOUT WATER QUALITY THREATS Neighbors of a newly built sow breeding facility have joined with The Humane Society of the United States in seeking to overturn the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources decision to allow the factory farm to take more than eight million gallons of groundwater per year. The factory farm, located in Todd County, Minn., is owned by Iowa-based Gourley Bros. LLC. The facility plans to confine nearly 4,000 pigs and piglets into a single building. The majority are pregnant pigs confined for essentially their entire lives in gestation crates, cages so small they prevent the animals from even turning around.Industrialized sow facilities that lock pigs into gestation crates harm animals, neighbors and the environment. Squeezing thousands of animals into one building forces neighbors to endure concentrated odor, massive strain on water supplies, and potential water contamination from mountains of manure, said Jonathan Lovvorn, senior vice president and chief counsel for animal protection litigation at The HSUS. Neighbors of the facility opposed the permit because of potentially life-threatening pollution of the water supply. Elevated nitrates have already been found in wells near the Gourley facility. There is a danger that the facilitys operation may lead to even greater levels of nitrates. Elevated nitrates can cause fatal methemoglobinemia (sometimes known as blue-baby syndrome). High nitrate levels in well water near animal operations have also been linked to spontaneous abortions in humans. The agency granted the permit without even commenting on any of these risks. The petitioners are represented by Eckberg Lammers and The HSUS is also represented pro bono by Shearman & Sterling LLP. Facts The Gourley facility is surrounded by freshwater emergent wetlands. Water bodies that run near and through the Gourley property and places where Gourley plans to apply manure feed into Lake Osakis, which is designated as impaired. Nine U.S. states have passed laws to ban gestation crate confinement of breeding pigs. Renowned animal welfare scientist and advisor to the pork industry, Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is clear on this issue: Confining an animal for most of its life in a box in which it is not able to turn around does not provide a decent life. Grandin further states, Weve got to treat animals right, and the gestation stalls have got to go. Leading pork producers Smithfield and Hormel have pledged to end the use of gestation crates at their company-owned facilities by 2017, and Cargill is already 50 percent crate-free. Meanwhile, many traditional family farmers have avoided using gestation crates for generations. In a 2013 survey by the National Pork Board, 53 percent of pork producers said they do not use gestation crates or plan to stop using them in favor of the group housing of sows. Anna West

Firearms deer harvest down 6 percent from 2012

Minnesota hunters harvested 128,814 deer through the second weekend of the 2013 firearms season, according to preliminary numbers announced Nov. 20 by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The season ended Sunday, Nov. 17, for all but 100-series permit areas in the northeastern part of the state, where the season concludes on Sunday, Nov. 24. A late 3B firearm season in southeastern Minnesota begins Saturday, Nov. 23, and concludes Sunday, Dec. 1. Firearm harvest to date is down 6 percent from last year at this time. Overall, antlered buck harvest is down 7 percent and antlerless harvest is down 5 percent. Based on our population estimates, the decrease in buck harvest was not anticipated and may reflect hunting conditions more than population, said Leslie McInenly, DNR big game program leader. Based on the preliminary numbers, our opening and second weekend harvests from Saturday to Monday were down 4 and 13 percent, respectively, and we experienced windy conditions the first weekend and both wind and rain the second weekend.

Thursday, December 5, 2013 pin. Other placers for Browerville were Harry Henley at 182 pounds and Damian Lange at 220 pounds who both earned fourth place finishes. From a coachs perspective we have wanted to get better every day to start the year and I think we did that on Wednesday. We had a lot of new or returning wrestlers compete for the entirety of their matches. We made some mistakes that hopefully become learning experiences and allow us to grow. The learning curve in wrestling can sometimes be a steep one, and for the inexperienced wrestlers we have, whether we are watching our teammates or wrestling ourselves the goal should always be to learn something we can apply the next time we compete. In talking to our athletes, I think, many of them achieved this on Wednesday. The Tigers full squad will be in action next Saturday, December 7th in Litchfield at the Dragon Varsity/JV Invitational.

Mixed results at wrestling tourney

The Browerville wrestling team kicked off its season in Belgrade on Wednesday, November 27th in a varsity only tournament. With the Thanksgiving holiday happening so late in the month the tournament was moved to Wednesday and was reduced from eight to seven teams. With only seven days of practice and a roster comprised of many new wrestlers only nine of the 22 Tigers competed. The results were mixed, as one might expect with only seven days of practice. At 113 pounds returning section place winner Noah Becker came in as the number one seed and won the tournament with two impressive victories, winning by fall and scoring a 6-0 decision over Jonah Voss of BBE in the finals. Another section place winner that wrestled to his seed was Jackson Wollenburg as he took third place, winning the third place match by

Sheriffs Report
On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, at approx. On November 29, at approx. 6:42 am, the sheriffs office received a 911 call for a residence on County 71, just north of County 38, Burleene Township. Individuals at the residence were awakened by carbon dioxide detectors and discovered Regina Ann Schlosser, 25, rural Carlos, in a running vehicle inside the attached garage. Individuals at the scene and emergency responders attempted resuscitation efforts that were unsuccessful. Douglas County Sheriff s Office and North Ambulance of Alexandria assisted at the scene. At 1 pm, November 29, Joshua Anderson, Long Prairie, was driving on County 10 when his home built enclosed trailer disconnected from this 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe, slid off the road and over turned. The trailer sustained minor damage. Anyone with information concerning any of these cases is urged to call the Todd County Sheriffs Department at 320-732-2157 or 1-800-794-5733.

In all, the county has a total of 47 applications that are stuck in the bureaucratic realm of the Internet, and theres nothing the county can do with them as the system doesnt allow it. But, there has been some success, albeit very limited. A total of 14 cases have been approved. Staff told the committee they hope they will be given clearance to move forward with these applications soon as some of them are applying for benefits to be effective during this calendar year yet.

Public transit from Hewitt at risk

By Jason C. Brown, Publisher/Editor Long Prairie Leader The public transportation pilot program that would take residents from Hewitt to Alexandria or Wadena appears to be at risk. Public health officials told the Todd County Board of Commissioners acting as the Health and Human Services Committee, that the Minnesota Department of Transportation has denied funding for the program. This would mean that Todd County would have to flip the bill for the entire program if they are to proceed with it. The cost of the program and the lack of funding for it may mean the program would be delayed, if it is to even get off the ground. Originally, it was thought the program could run for six months to gauge ridership starting in January. Where the money would come from gentleman is still the challenge. With little time and little ideas for where the money might come from, it was suggested they seek a $5,000 grant from the Initiative Foundation to ease the burden on the county. It was decided to move forward the idea of a grant to offset the countys share of the pilot program and to also hold off on launching the program until a funding source whether its with the help of a grant, or exclusively through the county. Other Business The HSS Committee also addressed the following: -Announced that those who receive SNAP benefits will see a decrease as the stimulas package runs out through the previous version of the Farm Bill. -Scheduled the last meeting of the year for Dec. 27 at 9 a.m. -Briefly discussed a proposal for more shared HHS services with Morrison County as a way to save on resources since both Todd and Morrison will soon be without directors in this area. It was discussed that something of this magnitude, depending on the depth of it, could take years to fully implement rather than a couple months. It was decided that they would discuss this further and see where it goes.

ASK A TROOPER
By Sgt. Jesse Grabow of the Minnesota State Patrol Question: What are the differences in the new youth drivers license laws? 15 year old farm permit user, provisional 16 year old drivers license through age 18. Please include how many non-related passengers they can have and what times of the day they can drive. This is a good refresher to the parents with teens this age. Answer: This is what Minnesota law says in reference to farm permits: the commissioner may issue a restricted farm work license to operate a motor vehicle to a person who has attained the age of 15 years and who, except for age, is qualified to hold a driver's license. - The restricted license shall be issued solely for the purpose of authorizing the person to whom the restricted license is issued to assist the person's parents or guardians with farm

County still struggling with MN SURE

By Jason C. Brown, Publish/Editor Long Prairie Leader Minnesotas health insurance exchange for the Affordable Care Act, MN SURE, is still giving the Todd County Health and Human Services Division headaches. With a launch in early October, the system has been mired technical troubles that have left counties and the public in general left with little precious time to get signed up for the now required health insurance. Even with proposed extensions and fixes, the system still appears to be failing. HHS staff reported to the HHS Committee that all staff were now registered to use the system, which they werent before, but they still cant process applications.

Todd County Board Chair makes public apology

By Jason C. Brown, Publisher/Editor Long Prairie Leader After the Todd County Board of Commissioners reopened a closed session during a special meeting Nov. 26, Todd County Board Chair offered a public apology to Todd County MIS Director Chris Pelzer. I Randy Neumann extend a public apology to Chris Pelzer regarding the discussion at the Nov. 5 board meeting and work session regarding the administrator information on the administrative page on the county website. Ive been working with Chris on replacing the content on the administrator page. She has been waiting on information that has

been provided by myself and the shared board of commissioners. And this shouldve been stated during the Nov. 5 meeting. Chris does excellent work for the county including managing the website and should not be held responsible for the information not being removed from the site. I take full responsibility for this not being communicated to the board and to the public on Nov. 5. I apologize.
